Registered Nurse - Vascular Access

Job Overview:

This position applies the nursing process in providing direct and indirect holistic care to patients and their families.  The position also collaborates, in a collegial manner, with physicians and other health care team members in meeting the patient’s needs.  This position may delegate certain aspects of care to those under their direct supervision, within the scope of nursing practice. This position does float between GSH and BNH on a six-week advance schedule. 

Shift: Full Time Days (.9 FTE; 36 hrs/week)

Job Requirements:

New hires required to obtain BSN within 5 years of hire. 
BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers)
Registered Nurse
Proficient in peripheral IV placement. Desired experience in placing ultrasound guided peripheral IV (USGPIV) and/or peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). Preferred not required. 
Preferred membership in related professional organization
2-3 Years clinical nursing, Minimum 2 years experience required
Nursing Certification to be obtained in vascular access within one year of hire
 

Job Responsibilities:

Professionalist: maintains and improves current knowledge in area of practice through activities such as continuing education, formal education, professional organization membership, and/or certification. Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others. Provides peers with constructive feedback regarding their practice. Has met all mandatory unit and Trihealth Core requirements, which includes TB testing, flu vaccine, heart-code and fit testing. Has completed CBE and participated in team activities (i.e. schedule-QA-Supplies-staff and patient education). Has participated in a Trihealth or unit committee, which includes SLC. Has explored opportunities for specialized skills (A-line insertion). Is active in a National Organization (AVA or INS0. Has achieved certification in area of practice. Has submitted a Bright Idea for the department. 

Leadership: Demonstrates leadership ability by acting as a preceptor and/or a mentor for the less experienced team member. Consistently displays professionalism, is supportive and encouraging to newer team members. Has take the lead in the department identifying areas of needed improvement and encouraging teamwork in resolving these issues. Has participated in activities outside the PICC team(clinical educator, committee involvement) which enhances your ability to achieve successful relationships with staff house wide. Demonstrates appropriate time management skills as well as the ability to prioritize patient needs. Is proficient in critical thinking when problem solving. Collaborates with the patient, family, and the interdisciplinary team to individualize the plan of care. Is able to confidently adapt to a changing environment. 

Clinical Skills: Performs technical skills according to policy and procedure and accepted standards within their area of practice. Safely administers medications/treatments and monitors their effects. Uses all equipment in a safe, appropriate manner. Demonstrates proficiency with PICC insertions, consistent with CDC, AVA, and INS standards of care. Exhibits clinical skills consistent with TriHealth Policy and Procedure for insertion as well as care and maintenance of lines. Insertions are both accurate and timely. All documentation is accurate and complete. Is knowledgeable of the patient's vasculature and effectively troubleshoots difficult insertions. Demonstrates skill in the re-positioning of catheters, and the evaluation of clotted lumens by utilizing all available resources. 

Quality: consistently models quality and safety standards when participating in any patient care activities. This includes but not limited to the following activities: hand washing, control of sharps, use of full body drape, sterile technique with line insertions, and maintaining a safe, secure and clutter free environment post procedure. Participates in Quality Monitoring house-wide and provides direct feedback to staff and managers-reports through PICC Quality Council with TriHealth policy and procedure for insertion as well as care and maintenance of lines. Insertions are both accurate and timely. All documentation is accurate and complete. Is knowledgeable of the patient's vasculature and effectively troubleshoots difficult insertions. Demonstrates skill in the re-positioning of catheters, and the evaluation of clotted lumens by utilizing all available resources. 

Customer Service: Exhibits customer service skills consistent with TriHealth Mission and Vision. While interacting with patients, physicians, and staff, demonstrates effective communication as well as collaboration and teamwork with co-workers. Consistently gives patients and visitors an appropriate understanding of the PICC procedure as well as the perception that you are here to meet the patient's needs
