Clinical Laboratory Bioinformatics Medical Director
ARUP Laboratories, Department of Pathology, University of Utah School of Medicine
The Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and ARUP Laboratories invites applications from individuals interested in building an academic career in Clinical Laboratory Bioinformatics. We seek candidates with substantial experience in computational and machine learning methods as applied to clinical laboratory testing.
ARUP is a comprehensive, high-complexity national reference laboratory serving a diverse clientele that includes more than half of the nation’s academic medical centers, children’s hospitals, major commercial laboratories, military and government facilities, and community health systems. This broad reach has created one of the largest clinical laboratory data resources in the United States, spanning multiple disciplines, testing modalities, and patient populations.
ARUP offers a unique environment for computational pathology and laboratory data science, combining large-scale real-world clinical laboratory datasets with substantial on-premises computing infrastructure and expertise in bioinformatics, machine learning, and software development. The successful candidate will join multidisciplinary teams of pathologists, data scientists, and engineers developing, validating, and deploying new diagnostic technologies that directly impact patient care.
Applicants should hold an MD, DO, MD/PhD, DO/PhD, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree. Physician candidates should be board-certified or board-eligible in anatomic and/or clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology and eligible for medical licensure in Utah. PhD candidates should be board-certified or board-eligible in a clinical laboratory specialty. Additional American Board of Pathology fellowship training or subspecialty expertise will be viewed favorably, particularly in hematopathology, clinical informatics, molecular genetic pathology, and laboratory genetics and genomics. Current fellows and other trainees who will complete training before the anticipated start date are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will primarily focus on research within the Institute for Research and Innovation in Diagnostic and Precision Medicine, advancing computational methods, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning applications in laboratory medicine. Access to ARUP’s extensive laboratory data resources, bioinformatics infrastructure, and collaborative scientific environment provides exceptional opportunities to develop and deploy clinically impactful diagnostic technologies.
Clinical responsibilities are expected to comprise approximately 30% effort and may include laboratory directorship, clinical consultation, and diagnostic case signout, aligned with the candidate’s training and expertise. The candidate will also contribute to the educational missions of ARUP Laboratories and the University of Utah Department of Pathology through teaching, mentorship, and scholarly activity.
Academic rank and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments.
A curriculum vitae, a cover letter detailing experience and current and future interests, and the names and contact information of three individuals who could provide letters of recommendation.
