Security Guard-Vocational Instructor Role

We are seeking experienced and certified instructors to provide foundational and advanced training for juvenile justice-adjudicated youth in residential and detention center settings throughout the state of Connecticut. These positions offer the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of youth by equipping them with valuable career skills and certifications. Instructors will dedicate 8-10 hours per week (evenings and weekends) to preparing students for certification and workforce readiness. Hourly salary ranges from $36 to $42. ACES collaborates with the state's juvenile justice department, providing vocational training for youth in residential settings throughout Connecticut. Placement will be decided upon by the department, ACES, and the specific need, in collaboration with the instructor.

Position Overview
The Security Guard–Vocational Instructor (4010) is a specialized contract position responsible for training justice-involved youth in the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue employment as licensed security guards in the State of Connecticut. The instructor will provide structured classroom and hands-on instruction aligned with state requirements for security guard certification (Guard Card), preparing participants for successful completion of state licensing exams and entry-level employment opportunities. This role combines workforce preparation with mentorship, guiding young people toward responsible and sustainable careers in the protective services field.

Key Responsibilities

Vocational Instruction
•    Develop and deliver a curriculum that meets Connecticut Security Guard Certification (Guard Card) training standards, including:
o    Legal powers and limitations of security officers
o    Basic first aid and emergency response
o    Fire safety
o    Use of force and de-escalation techniques
o    Ethics and professional conduct
o    Report writing and communication skills
•    Provide instruction that is accessible to diverse learners with varied educational and behavioral needs.
•    Administer practice tests, evaluations, and skill assessments to prepare youth for the official CT security guard exam.
•    Stay current with state statutes, licensing requirements, and training updates related to the security profession.

Youth Engagement & Mentorship
•    Motivate and mentor participants to view security work as a viable and meaningful career pathway.
•    Model professionalism, accountability, and workplace readiness.
•    Support youth in developing resume-building skills, interview readiness, and job search strategies related to protective services.
•    Collaborate with staff to ensure instructional strategies align with behavioral and rehabilitative goals of the juvenile justice program.
Program Administration & Compliance
•    Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson delivery, assessments, and student progress.
•    Ensure curriculum and instructional delivery comply with Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) requirements.
•    Assist in coordinating testing logistics, exam applications, and any related state paperwork for students pursuing licensure.
•    Provide progress updates and outcome reports to program leadership.
