The Role
Reporting to the Senior Vice President Finance, CMC & Quality, the Executive Director, Finance, CMC is responsible for financial leadership of Moderna’s global supply chain operations, including procurement operations, technical operations, worldwide manufacturing plants, innovation, facilities & engineering, and EHS. CMC is gearing up for an exciting transformation stage and will contribute to the total Moderna long range plan as well as how we leapfrog change on the functional side. This role will become a lead change agent in the CMC finance transformation and will help re-envision how the organization approaches accounting and operational finance with digital centricity and other enhancing technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced reporting/analytics.
The role will collaboratively partner across the accounting and operations organization to help simplify complexity and deliver a transformational approach. This leader will work closely with the Chief Accounting Officer and auditors as well as partner with CMO and FP&A leaders to both streamline reporting and interpret the results. They will also help shape the control environment.
The Executive Director, Finance will promote strong financial management in all plants and distribution centers and collaborate with both the corporate and division finance units as well as plant controllers. Leadership is critical for improving and standardizing systems and integrating operations results with corporate financial statements.
This position is responsible for identifying key business and financial trends and developing action plans to position the company and its business units for profitable growth and efficiency across their three primary platforms. The Executive Director, Finance will be counted on to ensure the supply chain finance and broader operations finance function is a true partner to the business units and customers.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Serve as an accounting and finance operations leader and change agent in the CMC finance transformation.
Drive continuous improvement within the finance organization to streamline processes and improve communication and flow of information to the business.
Understand the financial needs and drivers of manufacturing and technical development operations; provide both operational and strategic financial support to drive the business and with other key cross-functional stakeholders.
Review and approve the current year standard COGS rates for Clinical and Commercial products and serve as a subject matter expert on methodology for the application of direct and indirect labor hours, machine hours and other variance drivers.
Oversee all related journal entries and reconciliations for Cost of Goods and inventory accounting/reporting. Support internal controls, management reporting, and variance /flux reporting.
Ensure appropriate recording and reconciliation of CMO contracts and reporting in strong collaboration with the supply chain team.
Provide financial oversight for quarterly/annual physical inventories and cycle counts
Lead a team of cost accounting professionals and be a subject matter expert/coach for GMP/Tox batch costing.
Partner with manufacturing and technical development leadership on long-term strategy, investments in overall supply chain and decision analysis (ROI, make vs. buy, etc.); work closely with Manufacturing accounting led to incorporate impact on unit cost, inventory strategy, etc.
Support emerging development candidates (DCs) with business case drivers (e.g., process development cost, cost of supply, supply chain investments) in nomination and approval process.
Provide management reporting to manufacturing & technology development leadership; present key insights or trends that require attention and enable leadership team to manage to establish budgets.
Assist accounting operations team during month-end close with manufacturing and tech-dev related accruals and receiving of services as well as supporting annual audit as needed.

10+ years’ experience
BA/BS required.
