About the role

Job Purpose:

The Senior Director, Pipeline Project Management for Business Development brings extensive experience in drug development, business development/alliance management, and integration/separation management and is responsible for managing highly complex BD projects (eg. R&D integrations for M&A, due diligence/integration of complex multi-asset in-licensing deals, etc) until business as usual (BAU) while also providing leadership and mentorship to the broader BD PPM team and helping to establish best practices in this newly formed team. 

The role works in close collaboration with the Business Development, Corporate Development, and Alliance Management counterparts as well as counterparts across R&D and is responsible for ensuring effective leadership and agile project management for complex due diligence and integration/separation activities within GSK. 

The role is responsible to ensure the quality and robustness of the due diligence and integration plans, ensuring timely and thorough knowledge transfer (including overall management of multiple complex data workstreams), and proactively identifying, tracking, and managing risks related to execution of deal in a timely manner or execution of the integration/knowledge transfer plan.

The Senior Director can independently manage a complex R&D integration or divestment or complex multi-asset due diligence and will establish best practices in this space.  The Senior Director will share expertise with the broader PPM BD organization and will harmonize best practices for major R&D integrations/divestments with best practices for asset acquisition/in-licensing and asset divestment/out-licensing.

The Senior Director will have line management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the strategic integration planning, due diligence and execution phases of M&A transactions, in-licensing, and divestments that align to business objectives.

  • Drive cross functional alignment on development plan(s), integrated timelines, resource, and cost estimates for new BD opportunities, and ensure R&D risks associated with diligence and/or execution post deal are identified, tracked, and actively managed until BAU.

  • Proactively identify and manage/resolve complex, cross-functional operational issues, often unique to each deal

  • Manage R&D M&A integration activities and divestments in collaboration with Corporate Development integration management office and/or with Business Development/Alliance Management.

  • Works closely with partners in Business Development, Alliance Management, Corporate Development, and R&D functions to plan the R&D integration strategy, realize and accelerate deal value, plan for an issue-free Day 1 experience and manage priorities across internal cross-functional teams.

  • Work with relevant stakeholders to support and manage the transfer of knowledge/data in timely and compliant way between deal closure and completion of integration to business as usual (BAU).

  • Drives clarity and removes barriers to ensure team success; interfacing with management and influencing decision-making, proactive management, and mitigation of risks, and ensures appropriate communication and interface with internal or external governance as needed.

  • Lead R&D data disposition workstreams for large M&A integrations including leading process, data and system discovery, and gap analysis by the functional data workstreams and partner with the Tech team and other functional leaders to manage and identify risks across R&D data disposition workstreams.

  • Partner with PPM BD team to provide best practice for due diligence, integration planning and execution to reduce integration timelines and maximize synergy capture. Seek opportunities for continuous improvement and leveraging lessons learned.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences or Business required.

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in drug development, with breadth of understanding to include research and discovery, clinical development and projects plan requirements, filing expectations (FDA/EMA) and/or regulatory strategies, and CMC/product development, 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a global project or portfolio management role or integrations management role preferably in the pharmaceutical industry (small molecules, biologics, and/or vaccines).

  • Minimum 2 years directly managing Integration/Divestment activities associated with M&A or consulting experience in the M&A space.

  • Experience with BD and/or due diligence
