Overview

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health and the Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City are seeking a psychologist to lead assessment and developmental care for infants and toddlers with congenital heart defects (CHD). The Cardiac Neurodevelopmental (CND) Program has been in existence for over 10 years and is designed to serve infants, toddlers, children, youth, and their families.

We are developing an integrated cardiac well-being program which will merge our existing CND program with our psychosocial services program (Thrive) to advance a model of comprehensive developmental and psychosocial care within the Ward Family Heart Center. This program includes pediatric psychology, pediatric neuropsychology, social work, nutrition, PT/OT, speech/language pathology, and other allied healthcare providers. Our team of providers is also actively involved in research and service through work with organizations including the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative (CNOC), and the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPC-QIC).

The CND program currently has 2 neuropsychologists working with children 6 years of age and older, and we are looking to fill a position for a neurodevelopmental care specialist for children under 6 years of age, including infants and toddlers. The psychologist will be responsible for infant and early childhood assessment (initial and serial follow up), consultation and counseling with parents and caregivers around common developmental and behavioral challenges in early childhood, school consultation, and advocacy.

The psychologist will also oversee assessment data management and fidelity within the Heart Center database, and within other multinational data registries. The psychologist will work in collaboration with the CND program nurse coordinator, Thrive team director and program coordinator, and with pediatric cardiologists, neurologists, and nurses working in the Heart Center.  Additional opportunities exist to expand multidisciplinary infant developmental care within the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and Fetal Health Center and engage in research and QI efforts.

The ideal candidate will be a psychologist with broad training in pediatric psychology, neuropsychology, neurodevelopment, and/or related fields in clinical child psychology. Experience with infant assessments, in particular the Bayley Scales of Infant/Toddler Development, 4th edition, is preferred. The position will include teaching and supervising in the hospital’s pediatric medical and psychology training programs, including our APA-accredited psychology internship, and include protected academic time for service, research, and other scholarly activities.  Faculty mentoring is available for those interested in clinical scholarship (e.g., program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives).  This position carries an academic appointment at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, with rank commensurate to qualifications and experience.

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in clinical psychology, pediatric psychology, or clinical child psychology
  • Completed an internship at an APA-accredited internship program with a focus on child psychology
  • Relevant experience
  • Eligibility for licensure in Missouri and Kansas
