Job Duties

Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking an Art Therapist or Dance Movement Therapist to support the NVMHI mission: actively promoting the recovery of individuals with serious mental illness. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of Art Therapy or Dance Movement Therapy and the recovery process. The successful candidate will provide safe and effective art therapy or dance movement therapy programming, in a supportive environment, to encourage self-expression, enhance coping skills and foster the self-development of individuals. In addition to providing well-coordinated and diverse therapy programs, responsibilities include completing assessments, engaging in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, completing therapy consultative evaluations, and documenting the progress of individuals in an EHR. Additional duties will include, but are not limited to, participating in special events, engaging in departmental and hospital wide initiatives, and utilizing recovery and behavior management techniques with the individual’s receiving services at NVMHI.

This position is Monday to Friday; however, schedule flexibility and occasional holiday coverage is essential.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Art Therapy or Dance Movement Therapy is required.
• Experience evaluating individuals for therapy services, establishing treatment interventions and assessing the effectiveness of those interventions.
• If an Art Therapist, candidate must be Registered (ATR), If a Dance Movement Therapist, candidate must be Registered ( R-DMT).


Additional Considerations

Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) preferred.
• Experience providing therapy services to individuals in a psychiatric setting preferred.
• Previous experience with trauma informed practices strongly preferred.
