Description:

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Job Opening:

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Aquatic Biologist I. The position works with the New Bedford Fishway Crew staff to assist in the design, development, and execution of diadromous fish passage projects in coastal Massachusetts watersheds. The position will undergo a 2-year mentoring period to learn fish passage design and fishway fabrication methods. Mentoring will be provided by the Fishway Crew Foreman and the Diadromous Fish Project Leader. In addition to the primary duties of supporting and enhancing diadromous fish passage, the position will also contribute to ongoing project tasks of designing and maintaining monitoring stations for diadromous fish species, and receive specific assignments related to diadromous fish monitoring and management.           

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Participate in all seasonal activities of the DMF Fishway Crew stationed in New Bedford. 
2. Deploy construction methods in the field and DMF Fishway Crew shop in New Bedford to design.
3. Fabricate, and install concrete, aluminum, and wood fishways.
4. Conduct routine field investigations on the status of diadromous fish passageways in coastal Massachusetts watersheds to identify passage deficiencies and initiate remediation.
5. Assist the design, development, and execution of diadromous fish projects in coastal Massachusetts. This includes field development, communications with Towns and property owners, fishway designs, permitting, contracting and construction.    
6. Supervision of seasonal employees that assist with monitoring and construction projects.  
7. Participate in diadromous fish monitoring, including fabrication and installation of custom monitoring stations.
8. Participates in routine in-stream maintenance of migratory channels to remove debris jams, tree falls, and plant overgrowth. At times will lead projects and related coordination with local partners. 
9. Specific assignments will be made to lead diadromous monitoring stations. This includes responsibility for installation, maintenance, and data processing for individual stations.
