Job Description :

JOB SUMMARY:

The ACNO assists the Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in the clinical operations of the hospital & manages projects by working closely with the hospital CNO, System Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) & members of the Nurse Executive Council (NEC).  Works to plan, develop, coordinate, implement & evaluate nursing care delivery, nursing professional development, & evidence-based practices for clinical programs/divisions.

Reports to the CNO of Patient Care Services & acts on behalf of the CNO in her/his absence as assigned. Works to ensure the effective coordination of human, fiscal & material resources.

The ACNO supports the day to day nursing operations as delegated by the CNO.  In addition, the ACNO develops, leads and executes larger scale operational projects as delegated by the CNO/CNE.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts on behalf of the CNO when indicated.
  • Serves as the nursing leader within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Acts as interim nurse leader within assigned hospital/area of responsibility as deemed necessary by the CNO/CNE
  • Collaborates with Administration in planning, development & evaluation of strategic plans, clinical programs & services.
  • Serves as an executive leader in delegated operational projects including but not limited to:
    • Modifications to nursing practice
    • Initiatives in patient quality & safety
    • Efforts in recruitment & retention
    • Process improvement initiatives
    • Review of nursing productivity
    • Initiatives in cost containment
    • Planning of new clinical services that generate additional revenue
  • Responsible for clinical program development & operational optimization projects, as defined by the CNO and/or CNE.
  • Leads capital projects for the hospital’s Patient Care Services
  • Provides leadership in projects related to care progression, throughput and reduction in length of stay.
  • Collaborates with peers across the organization to identify appropriate non-clinical support for the delivery of safe, effective patient/family care and to ensure that clinicians have available to them the necessary support to carry out their clinical responsibilities.
  • Assesses environmental needs, including the need for equipment and supplies that support the delivery of safe, effective patient care.  Works with appropriate colleagues to ensure availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of such resources.
  • Prepares & recommends budgets, based on identified goals and data, designed to support the clinical objectives of the Patient Care Services Department.
  • Works with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure a system for evaluation and control of costs & maintenance of productivity for Patient Care Services.
  • Accountable for monitoring the budget and controlling variances.
  • As delegated, steps in to oversee other units/departments in the absence of a nurse director.
  • Regularly rounds on key constituents (employees, nurse leaders, and physicians) to enhance communication, ensure alignment and oversee operations.
  • Seeks knowledge of regulatory standards, maintaining responsibility for Patient Care Services compliance.
  • Ensures timely and thorough follow-up to patient/family complaints and occurrence reports and monitors corrective actions to ensure resolution.
  • May perform other job-related duties as required or requested.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires walking, standing, and sitting. Works in an office environment. Must speak English in good, understandable terms. Intact sense of sight and hearing. Work requires critical thinking and ability to concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly in stressful situations. Must be able to lift 10 pounds of weight.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

Graduate of accredited School of Professional Nursing BSN required Master’s degree or higher in Nursing/Health Care-Related field required PhD or DNP preferred

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

Currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas BLS Healthcare Provider  - Required Appropriate professional leadership certification required within 1 year of eligibility for professional certification exam

Related Work Experience:

Five years of experience at the director level; most recent 3 of the last 5 years in direct leadership role in a hospital setting or direct patient care environment with demonstrated outcomes.
