Costume Shop Overhire - Costume Technicians
Steppenwolf Theatre Company is seeking applications for temporary overhire positions in all areas of costume technology, including an Alteration Manager, First Hands and Stitchers. Please specify which position(s) you’re applying for in your cover letter. This is a rolling application: applicants will be considered for various projects as needed throughout the 2025-26 Season, with the earliest potential start date falling in August of 2025 and the latest in May 2026. Please note that the Alteration Manager position is specifically from August-November 2025. The Steppenwolf Costume Shop functions under the shared values of curiosity, communication, mutual respect and excellence.
These positions report to the Costume Shop Director.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Work in a team environment to build and alter a wide variety of costumes for Steppenwolf.
- Complete notes with an eye for quality and efficiency.
- Communicate with the supervisor to ensure projects are on track.
Qualifications
ALTERATIONS MANAGER (Contract Dates: August – November 2025) – Desired
Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience altering built, purchased and rented garments.
- Familiarity with period garments.
- Ability to keep accurate and clear records.
- Ability to instruct and direct stitchers.
- Fitting experience.
- Ability to monitor pace of work and meet deadlines.
FIRST HAND - Desired Qualifications:
- All Stitcher qualifications.
- Pattern layout and cutting.
- Ability to instruct and direct stitchers.
- Ability to modify patterns/basic draping and/or flat patterning skills.
- Ability to monitor pace of work and meet deadlines.
- Fitting experience.
STITCHER - Desired Qualifications:
- Good time management and organization.
- Strong verbal communication.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
- Hand and machine sewing.
