About the Team
Global Policy and External Relations (GPER) is a team of 25 policy and government relations professionals who drive policy proposals and appropriation priorities from design to implementation. Our core capabilities are policy design and adoption to reach a broader group of students, and to help College Board programs innovate, adapt, and grow. We also focus on advocacy and policy implementation to build and maintain a powerful network of external allies that will help us advance our organizational goals. In this role, you are part of a close-knit Government Relations (GR) team of 13.
About the Opportunity
As the Assistant Director of Government Relations, you will collaborate with colleagues to create strategies to increase awareness support and growth of College Board programs. You will build and support a network of governors, education policy advisors, legislators, AP (Advanced Placement) Advocates, and education associations and organizations. You are a strong communicator with expertise in a specific policy area, which allows you to clearly communicate policy statements and proposals. You are agile and able to manage multiple states with differing priorities, political and economic landscapes, and timetables for getting the job done. You will report to the Executive Director of Government Relations and work closely with other GR and GPER colleagues.
In this role, you will:
GPER Team Support (60%)
Support the successful delivery of lobby registrations, state-specific compliance reports and contract renewals for GRDs
Ensure timely submission of employer and individual lobby reports
Assist in the development and maintenance of SmartSheets and other documents intended to help the team communicate with each other and stay apprised of interrelated activity such as attendance at conferences
Support the successful submission of 990 reports
Partner in planning of internal or external meetings
Assist GR and GPER teammates on specific content/staffing projects, e.g., policymaker and lobbyist engagement which could include creating or providing prep materials
State Government Relations (40%)
In partnership with the Executive Director of Government Relations, monitor policy activity impacting the College Board across states including Alaska, Alabama, Hawaii, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, and Vermont
Build and maintain a deep understanding of the key decision-makers that influence legislation and education policy in the states in your work portfolio
Understand the legislative environment across multiple states and be able to distill key information and strategy recommendations to GPER and organizational leadership
At the direction of the Executive Director of Government Relations, set and achieve measurable goals for maintenance, and growth, in volume and revenue for College Board products (including AP, Pre-AP, CLEP, PSAT, SAT and Search) in all states in your portfolio
About You
You have:
2-3 years of work experience with background or interest in government relations, policy, or advocacy
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple priorities and manage ambiguity
Willingness to take initiative and eagerness to learn
Strong organization and prioritization skills and the proven ability to move forward multiple projects in concert, both independently and as a member of the team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience organizing events, with an eye on logistics.
Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite, specifically PowerPoint and SmartSheet or other like software.
Strong attention to detail.

You work well under pressure and value and seek out feedback
Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
A passion for supporting the educational opportunities for millions of students
Ability to travel up to 40% of the time to attend internal meetings and occasional state visits.
Must be located in one of the following states: AL, IA, MO, LA or VT
