Your Specific Responsibilities
This is an OPS Registered Nurse position Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, Epidemiology, Disease Control and Immunization Services (EDC‑IS) / Office of HIV/AIDS, and functions as a Senior Registered Nurse providing public health nursing services in Miami-Dade County (and Monroe County as needed). This position reports to the Senior Human Services Program Specialist–SES. The majority of time will be spent assessing patient health problems and needs, developing and implementing nursing care plans, and maintaining policies and procedures specific to STD/HIV maternal, perinatal, and lactation care. The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse may advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide STD/HIV case management. This work includes providing consultation on health care programs, services, or policies; technical assistance; and education on STD/HIV-related issues. The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse is expected to adhere to established Health Department policies and procedures.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will provide consultation, technical assistance, training, and education to County Health Departments and public/private clinicians within Miami-Dade County on clinical practices related to STD/HIV perinatal and lactation care. Serves as a resource for technical knowledge in the field of STD/HIV maternal, congenital, and breastfeeding management.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will develop program policy, standards of care, procedures, training modules, and protocols in collaboration with STD/HIV program staff, agencies, and health care providers related to the management of STD/HIV nursing and lactation care.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will participate and provide technical assistance in cross-programmatic health service strategic objectives and integration of STD/HIV services in Miami-Dade.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will coordinate linkage to services, including Healthy Start, prenatal care, WIC, lactation support programs, and other maternal-child health resources.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse provides comprehensive medical case management services throughout pregnancy and postpartum, including home and hospital visits for mothers and infants. Conducts in‑home assessments to evaluate maternal health, infant well‑being, breastfeeding progress, medication adherence, and environmental or social factors that may impact care. Provides hospital-based support immediately postpartum to assist with lactation counseling, feeding plans, and coordination of HIV‑specific perinatal protocols.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will provide intensive mother/family education on the plan of care to prevent HIV transmission during pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding, and postpartum. Offers evidence‑based lactation counseling tailored to HIV considerations during home and hospital visits, ensuring continuity of care from birth through the breastfeeding period.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will provide education and follow-up in the hospital and home for mothers and babies throughout postpartum and lactation, including breastfeeding assessment, monitoring of infant feeding adequacy, maternal recovery, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will monitor and document CD4 and viral load for mother and infant, including during breastfeeding. Educates mothers on achieving and maintaining viral suppression. Monitors medication adherence and provides DOT when necessary.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse provides education on prenatal tests, delivery options, and family planning/contraception, including lactation-compatible contraceptive methods. Provides postpartum education and follow-up in the home for mothers and infants, including breastfeeding support and assessment of infant feeding adequacy.
The Perinatal HIV Outreach Registered Nurse will facilitate infant referral to the Pediatric Screening Clinic and assists with obtaining AZT/Zidovudine and other medications for the infant.
