About the role

Description

Stony Brook Medicine is in search of an experienced, board-certified Cardiothoracic surgeon to take on the role of Chief of the Cardiothoracic Division in the Department of Surgery.  In this role, the incumbent will also serve as the Co-Director of the Stony Brook Heart Institute.  We are seeking an individual with strong leadership qualities and a proven track record as a clinician and/or researcher to lead a Division with faculty possessing broad expertise encompassing all areas of cardiothoracic surgery. The Division of Cardiac Surgery at Stony Brook is a highly recognized clinical and academic department that offers an excellent level of care to patients. This is an excellent opportunity for a surgeon interested in an academic and clinical role. The individual will be expected to participate in clinical care, teaching, and university service.  Moreover, the individual is expected to lead quality initiatives and adhere to a high standard of care.  The candidate should have an established track record of excellent patient care and clinical outcomes.  We anticipate the candidate to make significant advances in the field of cardiothoracic surgery and contribute positively to the overall teaching and research goals in the Division, in the Department of Surgery, and in Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine.

The incoming Cardiothoracic Surgeon/Surgeon-in-Chief and Co-Director of the SB Heart Institute will be viewed as successful by meeting/exceeding the following objectives/goals as described below:

 

  • Bring leadership and experience to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Be respected as a clinically excellent surgeon.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to recruit top surgical candidates.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to develop a proactive approach to relationships with community-based cardiologists and specialists.
  • Be an advocate for excellence in education.
  • Be a champion of surgical quality and safety.
  • Be knowledgeable and experienced with surgical patient flow, clinics, pre-operative assessment, intraoperative care, postoperative recovery care, and discharge.
  • Possess working knowledge of faculty practice plans and compensation.
  • Be experienced and knowledgeable in working within multidisciplinary team structures and promoting collaborative practice.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
MD or DO Degree (or foreign equivalent). Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery. New York State medical licensed surgeon or be eligible for a New York State Medical License.  Must be eligible for a senior faculty position in accordance with the criteria established by the School of Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications: 
Strong academic credentials.

Non-Tenure Track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  To qualify for a senior faculty appointment, the candidate must meet the criteria established by the School of Medicine (School of Medicine's Criteria for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure).
