Overview
Buildings and General Services at the State of Vermont has an exciting opportunity with room for growth as a Maintenance Mechanic I within Operations & Maintenance.
As part of the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team you will work as part of a group and independently. This position serves the Capital District in Montpelier, which includes the State House and many historic buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic will work primarily on grounds and outdoor maintenance. This position will also be asked to assist with other duties as assigned including but not limited to; electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and lock repair.
This is a full-time position and the hours are 6am to 2:30pm. The position requires a valid driver's license and successful completion of a background check.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at state buildings and may include correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.
Minimum Qualifications
State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area.
OR
Completion of a one (1) year vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field AND one (1) year or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
OR
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
OR
Four (4) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance INCLUDING two (2) years or more at an independent level.
OR
One (1) year of experience as a BGS Utility Mechanic.
Special Requirements
Some positions in this class may require a valid driver's license and/or own transportation for travel between work sites.
A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check may be required for some positions within this class based on the locations where duties are to be performed.
