Qualifications and requirements
Applicants should have a current state RN license and possess a bachelor’s degree or associate degree from an accredited nursing school. Additional requirements include:
- BLS required.
- 2 YRS CHEMOTHERAPY INFUSION REQUIRED
- 3-5 YRS ONCOLOGY EXPERIENCE
- ONS CHEMO/BIO PROVIDER CARD PREFERRED
- OCN PREFERRED
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Department/Unit Summary
Safety Sensitive Position.
The registered nurse (RN) plans, coordinates and implements patient care specific to the age of the patient population served on the patient care unit. The RN ensures that quality care is provided in an efficient and safe manner, consistent with departmental standards of care. The RN demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, philosophy and goals of the assigned unit and the organization. He/she remains flexible to changing systems - is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practices, and treats staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect.
- Maintain current knowledge on oncology and hematology therapeutic regimens.
- Maintain current knowledge on side effects and symptoms related to oncology and hematology therapeutic regimens.
- Maintain current knowledge base on side effects associated with surgery or radiation treatments for oncology patients.
- Assist physicians in the health maintenance of patients in a complex disease state.
- Receive and screen all telephone requests for assistance by the existing patient base.
- Interview and assess patients for medical interventions in the office and on the telephone.
- Initiate medical interventions based on a symptom-focused protocol or guideline.
- Educate and monitor patient compliance regarding medical interventions.
- Perform interviews for the physician regarding current status of care by other providers.
- Perform closing interviews for the physician once the care plan has been determined.
- Monitor the psychosocial and emotional needs of the oncology patient for outside referrals and additional care.
- Assist the physician with the medication management of the existing patients.
- Support and back-up of the Oncology Nurse
