About the role

GENERAL SUMMARY: Maintains irrigation systems for landscaped medians, gardens, grounds and other horticultural features within the guidelines of standard operating procedures, County and department policies and procedures, and safety standards.  Performs backflow inspections in parks and recreation facilities and county wide medians. Reports to the Parks Maintenance Superintendent or other designated person.
 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and installs new irrigation systems, including valves, lateral lines, heads, etc.
  • Maintains irrigation systems and backflows within parks and county wide medians.
  • Inspects irrigation systems and backflows, and reports conditions and needed repairs.
  • Performs backflow inspections on all systems annually.
Qualifications

Education:  High School Diploma or GED

Experience:   Two (2) years of experience with installing and maintaining irrigation systems and backflow preventers

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Considerable knowledge of plants, shrubs, trees, and electronic sprinkler system.
  • Familiarity with County and department policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating tractors, trucks and other motor equipment, and interacting with the public.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Certification: Must have the ability to obtain backflow inspector certification within 6 months of hire.

Licensing:  Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. CDL Class B preferred but not required.Position requires staff call up in an emergency situation. 
Travel from the office to other locations is required of this position.

  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
