About the role

Position Description:

The EHS Manager will join the senior leadership team to lead environmental and safety performance at the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, South Dakota.  The EHS Manager is responsible for implementing the environmental and safety programs and management systems to meet performance requirements.

The EHS Manager’s key responsibility is the ongoing identification, assessment, prioritization, and management of safety and environmental risks through the development, implementation, monitoring, and continual improvement of a cost effective and efficient integrated management system.

General responsibilities include the administration of all Environmental and Safety programs and plans.  The role requires a hands-on approach to provide proactive environmental, occupational health, and safety support to site employees to achieve zero environmental and safety incidents.

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage and continuously improve Homestake’s Environmental, Health and Safety Programs, ensuring adherence to Barrick policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Implement Journey to Zero programs including the responsibility to stop unsafe work and the fatal risk management programs.  Coordinate safety standdowns and facilitate toolbox safety discussions.
  • Determine EHS employee training needs and prepare, schedule, implement, and manage program.
  • Work with operations to develop, review, create and update safe operating procedures and monitor compliance.
  • Facilitate and conduct routine evaluations and EHS audits, inspections, and critical control verifications, providing coaching as needed.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and coordination of environmental permitting, compliance, and monitoring programs.
  • Coordinate and manage environmental projects and technical studies as required.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and coordination of mine closure activities including planning and coordinating reclamation activities.
  • Represent Homestake at regulatory hearings, legal actions, and permit development meetings.
  • Represent Homestake at all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and community meetings.
  • Review/approve site, local, state, and federal reporting requirements as per the Homestake Obligations Registry.
  • Ensure all EHS policies and procedures are issued and implemented as required.  Make recommendations to improve policies and procedures to reflect changes to the operations.
  • Track compliance and hold employees and contractors accountable for following applicable EHS rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate a comprehensive EHS strategy for the mine sites and liaise with corporate closure management as required.
  • Ensure that accurate records and report data from all analyses and tests are produced in the prescribed timeframe.  Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results.
  • Ensure all EHS reports are submitted to regulatory agencies to meet permit and regulatory due dates.
  • Provide advice, resources and assistance to management, employees, and contractors in the interpretation of company EHS systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop succession plans and provide environmental personnel with coaching to ensure development plans align with staffing needs.
  • Conduct annual employee evaluations before the end of each year.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety and environmental site budgets.
  • Complete weekly and monthly reports on time.
  • Ensure accident prevention practices are maintained.
  • Ensure all safety and environmental hazards, near misses and incidents are reported and investigated according to relevant procedures and appropriate remedial actions are implemented promptly. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Health and Environmental Management, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Mine Engineering or related technical field required
  • Seven years relevant work experience required
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with others required
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to influence others required
  • Ability to manage safety and environmental programs required
  • Ability to speak and present speeches in public, regulatory and other meetings required
  • Experience in an operating or closed mining setting involving surface operations preferred
  • Critical thinking skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with timely and cost-effective delive
