Job Duties

Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.

Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service. Current Virginia State Police employees working in a Dispatcher function are not eligible for a retention bonus.

About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Dispatcher Senior at our Division 4 Headquarters in Wytheville, Virginia. The successful candidate will function as lead emergency communications dispatch worker in the Virginia State Police (VSP), Division IV, Communications Center; provide assistance to law enforcement and emergency personnel, the public, and the media and lead the work of a Communications Center; provide support and guidance to other dispatchers and call takers within the Communications Center to perform their duties effectively and proficiently; train and provide guidance to new dispatchers; operate within a specific geographic area by sending and receiving information and sending emergency assistance or service equipment to assist law enforcement personnel or the public; operate a variety of equipment; maintain logs and records; and accesses information through various systems/databases including CAD, VCIN, NCIC, NLETS. May work rotating shifts and is considered essential personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable knowledge of federal and State regulations governing the use of radio transmission and exchange of emergency communications; of the geographical area and locations of safety and emergency personnel and equipment within the area; of the rules and regulations pertaining to emergency communications to include radio codes; and of communications equipment and procedures.
•Skill in operating computers and keyboarding to include Microsoft software applications.
•Demonstrated ability to make/monitor entries, inquiries, and retrievals made in various communications databases; to work under pressure and exercise sound judgment under stress; to multi-task; to handle complaints/compliments; to lead staff, provide training, and formal instruction; to ensure safety guidelines and regulations are followed during emergency situations; to prepare reports; to work holidays and weekends; to work independently and as member of a team; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
•Graduation from high school or equivalent.
•Prior experience as a police/emergency service dispatcher is required.
•Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified which requires either United States citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
