Job Description:

The Director of Platforms is a strategic leadership role focused on building collaborative partnerships throughout Boston Globe Media to leverage a diverse ecosystem of digital channels for business success. This position serves as the critical connection point between platform strategies and organizational objectives, working across departments to ensure our digital presence drives meaningful results. Reporting to the VP of Platforms and R&D, this leader will orchestrate how our media properties utilize major platforms including Google, Meta, Apple, LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and emerging digital channels to achieve diverse business goals - from amplifying journalism to growing subscriptions and revenue.

The role requires a versatile leader who can navigate the complex intersection of journalism, technology, marketing, and revenue generation. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable collaborating with editorial leadership on content distribution strategies as they are optimizing paid campaigns to drive subscriptions. This position oversees the development and execution of comprehensive platform approaches that align with each team's unique objectives while maintaining a cohesive organizational strategy in an ever-evolving digital landscape. 

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Partnership: Partner with teams across the organization to understand their unique business objectives and develop customized platform strategies that directly support their goals
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary liaison between newsrooms, product teams, marketing, and revenue teams as it relates to digital channels to ensure alignment of platform initiatives with individual team objectives
  • Editorial Partnership: Work hand-in-hand with newsroom leaders to develop tailored platform approaches that amplify journalism initiatives while respecting editorial integrity and increasing content reach
  • Revenue Team Collaboration: Partner with subscription and advertising teams to develop platform strategies that directly drive revenue growth through optimized content distribution
  • Marketing Integration: Collaborate closely with marketing teams to align platform strategies with audience development and subscription acquisition goals
  • Collaborative Campaign Development: Lead the development of paid search and social media campaigns through active partnership with relevant stakeholders and management of vendor / agency partners 
  • Resource Allocation Partnership: Work collaboratively with department leaders to establish and manage platform-related budgets that maximize ROI for each team's specific objectives
  • Joint Project Development: Identify opportunities for special projects that leverage platforms to meet multiple teams' business goals simultaneously
  • Shared Data Insights: Analyze platform performance data and share actionable insights with partner teams to continuously refine strategies
  • Platform Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key platform partners on behalf of the entire organization to secure advantageous positioning
  • Cross-Team Innovation: Foster innovation across teams by identifying new platform opportunities that align with specific departmental goals
  • Team Leadership: Contribute to a team culture centered on service and partnership with internal stakeholders Ex) day to day tasks, team project involvement

Qualifications: 

  • 8-10+  years of experience in digital media, with at least 5 years in cross-functional platform strategy roles
  • Strong appreciation for journalism and understanding of newsroom dynamics and editorial integrity
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing social media strategies for media organizations or content publishers
  • Proven track record of improving engagement metrics and optimizing paid social campaigns
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and coordinating between editorial, product, and technology departments
  • Excited by the fast-paced and ever-changing media landscape with ability to adapt to emerging platforms and trends
  • Strong background in content strategy development for digital publishers and media properties
  • History of launching new digital initiatives and creating revenue-generating opportunities
  • Data-driven approach with experience using analytics to optimize performance
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to oversee multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Experience in scaling
