About the role

Audubon is currently seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to join our team.  The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) – Working RSO is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the company’s Radiation Protection Program in accordance with California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 17, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations – 10 CFR, Applicable Agreement State regulations, U.S. Department of Transportation (49 CFR), and international transport regulations (IATA / IMDG). This is a hands-on leadership role. The RSO will actively perform industrial radiographic inspections using both Pulsed X-ray systems and Sealed source gamma radiography (e.g., Ir-192, Co-60, Se-75 as applicable). The RSO is directly responsible for the creation and enforcement of radiation safety procedures. Applying for, maintaining, and amending Radioactive Materials Licenses. Managing byproduct material licensing compliance. Overseeing isotope radiography safety programs. Secure transport, storage, and tracking of radioactive materials. Performing field radiographic inspections. Ensuring regulatory compliance across all operations. This position reports to the Facilities Manager or Operations Manager and holds authority to suspend radiographic operations for safety or compliance concerns.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, submit, and maintain Radioactive Materials License applications and amendments.
  • Ensure compliance with 10 CFR, NRC, and Agreement State regulations.
  • Maintain X-ray device registrations (if applicable).
  • Serve as primary regulatory liaison with:
  • NRC
  • California CDPH Radiologic Health Branch
  • Agreement State agencies
  • Maintain and update Radiation Protection Program.
  • Manage NRC source tracking requirements.
  • Lead regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Maintain required records for licensing and compliance.
  • Oversee isotope radiography safety programs.
  • Ensure proper procurement, receipt, transfer, and disposal of byproduct material.
  • Maintain leak testing and inventory control.
  • Manage source accountability and NRC tracking compliance.
  • Ensure secure storage and transport of radioactive materials.
  • Oversee QSA retrieval and emergency response planning.
  • Conduct periodic internal audits of sealed source program.
  • Maintain compliance with:
  • 49 CFR (DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations)
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • IMDG Code (as applicable)
  • Ensure proper packaging, labeling, marking, and shipping documentation.
  • Maintain hazmat training records for affected personnel.
  • Oversee transport security plans and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Develop and maintain written radiation safety procedures.
  • Implement and enforce ALARA program.
  • Administer personnel dosimetry program.
  • Review dose reports and investigate abnormal exposures.
  • Ensure proper radiation surveys and instrument calibration.
  • Maintain training and qualification documentation.
  • Conduct internal radiation safety audits.
  • Establish and enforce restricted area controls.
  • Perform industrial radiographic inspections using:
  • Gamma radiography equipment
  • Pulsed X-ray systems
  • Conduct inspections on piping, pressure vessels, tanks, and structural components.
  • Establish controlled areas and exclusion zones.
  • Conduct radiation surveys before, during, and after exposures.
  • Perform job hazard analyses involving radiation risks.
  • Mentor radiographers and assistants in field operations.
  • Travel to client job sites as required.
  • Respond to radiation incidents or abnormal exposure events.
  • Coordinate source retrieval efforts if necessary.
  • Prepare required regulatory reports within prescribed timelines.
  • Conduct root cause investigations and corrective actions.
