About the opportunity 

 

The Technical Officer delivers timely and effective technical services within the designated area of responsibility to achieve enhanced education/research support outcomes. This includes provision of hands-on support for practical classes, demonstrations, or research as required, maintenance of equipment and safe working environment, provision of technical advice to users (academic staff/teaching staff/researchers), protocol optimisation (where required), sourcing and preparation of consumables, and assist in the writing of safety and procedural documentation. 

 

The Technical Officer will assist in implementing new processes, procedures, systems, and ways of working within the work area to improve customer service delivery, efficiency and resource utilisation as directed. The Technical Officer will provide training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, facilities, and general procedures. The role also supports the Senior Technical Officer in ensuring that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards and other compliance requirements of the work area are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy and relevant legislation.  

 

The Technical Officer will provide guidance to junior staff in the work area (e.g. Technical Assistants) to deliver work outputs.  

 

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • support the agreed delivery of technical services in the designated area 

  • support the implementation of service improvements and service excellence within the responsibility area 

  • contribute to a positive, professional, customer-focused team culture 

  • support the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, ensuring that the work area’s education/research requirements are effectively met 

  • champion best practices, workplace health and safety, compliance, and risk management  

  • seek and act on opportunities to cross-skill, including drawing on the knowledge and expertise of others 

  • provide project management or project support as required, collaborating with other TSS, PSU or central project managers/teams as required.  

 

About you: 

  • a degree in relevant physics discipline or equivalent extensive experience and training  

  • relevant Laser Safety Officer Certificate or willingness to undertake training 

  • experience preparing, streamlining, set up/pack down of higher educational Physics laboratory classes 

  • experience in preparing samples for practical classes and providing support to researchers 

  • experience providing first level support, training, and maintenance on common Physics laboratory equipment, including engaging external parties to repair equipment 

  • demonstrated ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers  

  • experience in the safe handling of hazardous substances (e.g., chemical waste, compressed gases and cryogens). A willingness to undertake relevant hazardous substance trainin
