Salary Range: $27 - $34/hourly

More About the Role:
Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance related activities for maintaining a variety of light, medium, and heavy Diesel and gas equipment at Mecklenburg County’s Solid Waste Facility located at 140 Valleydale Road, Charlotte, NC.  Incumbent will diagnose problems with equipment, utilize scan-tools, lubricate machines, repair brakes, and assist with aspects of maintaining equipment such as: Roll-Off Trucks, Front- End Loader Trucks, Backhoes, Wheel Loaders, Skid Steers, Hydraulic Excavators, Tub Grinders, Small Engines, Golf Carts, Handheld Power Tools, and similar equipment. Incumbent shall also complete routine equipment inspections and perform preventive maintenance requirements safely and efficiently. At times, this position may require working outdoors and may perform manual labor tasks associated with the job, all while ensuring safety policies and procedures are followed.  Welding experience is preferred.

NOTE: This position does require a CDL license, we will allow the incumbent eight-months to obtain licensure.

Position Summary
Performs responsible and skilled work engaging in solid waste equipment operation. This position, under
minimal supervision, is responsible for operating technically complex equipment and ensuring safety
procedures are followed during solid waste operations. This position is responsible for waste screening
activities, customer service interaction and may train others within this job series.

Essential Functions
Perform load inspections on waste materials such as Yard Debris, Construction and Demolition
Debris and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials
Operate a variety of equipment in the processing, collection and disposal of recyclables, garbage,
trash, and/or refuse. This includes large tub-grinders, angle-blade bulldozers, front-loaders and
wheel loader vehicles.
Perform complex maintenance and related care of Diesel equipment used in solid waste operations
Keep work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles
Drive semi-tractor trailers hauling materials and heavy equipment (walking floor trailers and lowboy trailers)
Assist with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools
Load and unloads heavy equipment from trucks and vehicles.
Monitor the safety of job sites and co-workers
Operate solid waste vehicles that require a CDL
Work Environment may vary based on assigned duties

Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of six years of experience

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes

Licenses and Certifications
Requires County Driving Privileges
Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A or B CDL with one or more of the
following endorsements, H(Hazardous Materials
