WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Senior Technical Director, Mechanical Engineering for our Kansas City, MO office. This position is best suited for an engineer who is seeking an opportunity to work within a team-focused local office, for a large world-wide engineering firm. Your Impact

Provide regional and multi-sector leadership to ensure mechanical engineering subject matter, technical deliverables, building and infrastructure projects and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Responsible for SME innovation and administration, ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal engineering, construction, and safety regulations, and providing strategic and consistent direction to address current and future challenges in a large-scale and multi-faceted business organization.

Role & Responsibilities:

Business Development:

  • Externally focused on business development, client outreach, and pursuit management.
  • Drive the overall long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of Mechanical Engineering work for WSP in assigned area of responsibility, with a focus on infrastructure opportunities in all disciplines (planning, design, and strategic consulting and program/construction management).
  • Funnel information and communicate with the Marketing Team and Operations Team.
  • Develop high-level business contacts and a client base for providing high-level mechanical engineering services, including identifying additional business development opportunities and cross-selling other WSP capabilities.

Leadership:

  • Develop, coach, train, and value our people.
  • Oversee the implementation of process changes.
  • Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.
  • Resource projects and coordinate with other offices and business lines for intercompany work.
  • Lead engineering discipline meetings and continuing educational opportunities, providing updates and recommendations to staff to foster innovation, development, and quality project delivery.
  • Provide discipline leadership to multi-disciplinary project teams and contribute to providing high-level strategic advice to clients.
  • Provide performance guidance and proactive leadership to assigned managers and staff.
  • Collaborate with professionals from various disciplines to provide future-ready solutions for clients. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Technical:

  • Provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues relating to automatic temperature control systems and specifications, air distribution (supply, return, exhaust), hydronic systems (chilled water, heating water, etc.), and plumbing systems (domestic water, waste, vent, storm, etc.).
  • Remain current in the latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Serve as the engineering discipline’s representative/liaison to various external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and government and community entities. 
  • Interpret and summarize data, including reports and documents for complex projects and initiatives that result in sound engineering and regulatory conclusions.

Project Management:

  • Lead and deliver projects with accountability for the profitable performance of individual projects and their successful completion within the specified area.
  • Provide senior leadership for proposals and project work scopes, pricing, budget, and performance metrics for the engineering discipline and contractor negotiations.
  • Oversee preliminary pricing development, risk analysis, and go/no go process during proposal and scoping phases.

Critical Success Factors:

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to build long-term, meaningful relationships with clients. Ability to translate complicated technical information into sales messages.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, and craft approaches to challenging problems.
