JOB PURPOSE: The Assistant Director of Residence Life (ADRL) is a live-in professional responsible for the management and oversight of residence hall operations. This position supervises and develops student and professional staff, ensures effective implementation of residential programs, and contributes to the strategic planning and delivery of the residential education model, in collaboration with the Director of Residence Life. The ADRL plays a key role in supporting first-year and transfer student success through coordination of educational initiatives, structured guidance, and crisis response. Evening and weekend availability is required for regular walk-throughs, staff meetings, community events, and responding to emergencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Director of Residence Life, the ADRL performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
RESIDENTIAL OPERATIONS & STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Staff Leadership & Supervision:
- Staff Leadership: Provide leadership and supervision for first-year educational initiatives and Residence Hall staff, building intentional connections with residents and managing evaluation processes, including coaching, performance reviews, and required personnel documentation. Maintain an efficient, collaborative, and proactive work environment within Housing & Residence Life and with campus partners.
- Team Management: Supervise and support staff, including one full-time Residence Life Coordinator, 15–18 Resident Advisors (RAs), four Head Sponsors, and approximately 30 first-year peer leaders (Sponsors). Meet regularly to provide mentorship, feedback, training, disciplinary follow-up, and program oversight.
- Professional Development: Lead recurring departmental training sessions for Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs), fostering growth, skills development, and team cohesion.
- Recruitment & Selection: Participate in recruitment and selection of RAs, Head Sponsors, and Sponsors.
Program & Committee Leadership:
- Co-Curricular Program Management: Coordinate and design initiatives through Second-Year Learning Communities, emphasizing civic engagement, diversity and inclusion, leadership development, and creative problem-solving. Manage program budgets and maintain accurate records.
- Committee Leadership: Chair the First-Year Initiatives Committee, driving intentional program development.
- Head Sponsor Program Leadership: Serve as the head planner for Head Sponsor Program development, including training, selection, and ongoing mentorship.
- Faculty in Residence Program Support: Co-manage the Faculty in Residence program with the Director of Residence Life, coordinating programming, check-ins, and scheduling.
- Departmental Planning & Strategic Leadership: Partner with the Director of Residence Life on vision casting, strategic initiatives, and implementation of new programs.
Student Conduct & Campus Safety:
- Student Code Administration: Serve as a Student Code Administrator (SCA) for assigned policy violations and manage the full conduct process.
- Campus Safety Coordination: Coordinate evacuation drills, health and safety inspections, and emergency preparedness efforts.
STUDENT SUPPORT & RESIDENCE LIFE OPERATIONS
Program & Student Engagement:
- Program Coordination: Support departmental events including Family Weekend, Orientation, and Hall Opening & Closing.
- FYE Program Leadership: Develop and lead first-year experience (FYE) programs and student support initiatives, encompassing educational, social, and mentorship components.
- Bystander Intervention Training: Lead mandatory FYE and Transfer student bystander intervention sessions in collaboration with the CARES office.
- FYE Collateral Team Chair: Chair the team responsible for orientation welcome sessions, move-in programming, ongoing workshops, and biweekly student review meetings.
