BASIC FUNCTION:     

The purpose of this position is to provide musical support to the Office of the Dean of the Chapel. The primary function is to coordinate music for the Sunday Chapel service and support choir practices.  This position will report to the Dean of the Chapel.  

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:    

Responsible for orienting and training others and assigning and reviewing their work.  May also be responsible for acting in a “lead” or “senior” capacity over other positions performing similar work, or related technical or operational tasks and reporting to a higher level on a formal basis.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts generally include staff, administrators, faculty, and students.  External contacts generally include Chapel speakers and their staff, guest musicians and vocalists, vendors, visitors, and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Provide keyboard sourced musical accompaniment for Chapel Choir rehearsals and Sunday Chapel services.

Works alongside the Director of Music and at the direction of the Dean of the Chapel to plan for musical selections.

Coordinates the musical ensemble that provides music for Sunday Chapel.  May also coordinate special musical guests and soloists.

Verifies and reports attendance and performance of musicians and soloists.  At the direction of the Dean of the Chapel, may provide approvals for performance by musicians and soloists.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

           

CORE COMPETENCIES:        

Ability to read music as well as play by ear.

Familiarity with a wide range of religious music, including hymns, spirituals, contemporary gospel, and other sacred genres.

Performance level keyboard skills.

Ability to arrange music for choir and ensemble as well as direct choir and ensemble.

Professional communication skills.

Ability to exercise discretion and ensure a high level of confidentiality.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students and Chapel visitors.

Possess the personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of the Office of the Dean of the Chapel and Howard University at large.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:       

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or any combination of five years education or experience.
