About the role

BlueHalo, an AV Company seeks a qualified Research Scientist/Engineer to join a collaborative multidisciplinary team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The position focuses on basic and applied research projects involving the processing and characterization of preceramic polymers and ceramic materials. Primary research responsibilities will be analysis of preceramic materials, processing of monoliths and composites, material performance assessment, and sample characterization. The successful candidate will be responsible in establishing the chemistry / processing / structure / property relationships in polymeric and inorganic systems. The Research Scientist/Engineer will be expected to work within a team framework while driving the intellectual and hands-on aspects of aerospace research and development projects. We are particularly interested in a highly motivated, adaptable, and capable individual with an advanced degree Masters or Ph.D. (Ph.D. preferred) in Materials Science, Ceramics, or related field.

Requirements:

  • M.S, Ph.D. (or to be completed in next 3 mos.) in Materials Science & Engineering, Ceramic Engineering or a related field (such as Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering) 
  • Ability to learn and develop new approaches and techniques
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by research publications in peer-reviewed journals and professional society conference presentations
  • This position will require a self-motivated individual with good interpersonal skills and careful attention to details
  • Adaptable to varying program objectives
  • This position is working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in working with interdisciplinary teams, including chemists
  • Experience with chemical synthesis, to include air-free techniques (e.g., use of glove boxes and Schlenk lines)
  • Experience in polymer or hybrid material synthesis
  • Experience in polymer processing and characterization
  • Prior experience in composite manufacturing, ultra-high temperature ceramics, or materials oxidation
