About the Role:

Thorn is looking for a Finance & Accounting leader who has strong experience supervising all accounting and financial functions.  The Director of Accounting will ensure that the organization has the policies, procedures, internal controls, segregation of duties and systems in place to support effective program implementation and to ensure flawless audits. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Accounting will be responsible for the direct management of several key accounting and reporting functions within the organization, including implementing financial policy, budgeting, financial and regulatory reporting, internal controls and risk management, research and analysis, the procure-to-pay cycle, the order-to-cash cycle, and compliance with contractual documents and government regulations. In addition, this position will partner with senior leadership, and the human resources (HR), legal, and information technology (IT) teams to leverage processes to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, legal, and IT functions.

The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of progressive Finance/Accounting experience including experience with SaaS subscription models.  Prior experience with financial oversight of nonprofit organizations is highly valued.  Success will require being a team player and having the ability to develop and leverage strong relationships across the organization while balancing priorities, managing expectations, and navigating ambiguity.  While remote-first, this position will be based in the Los Angeles area with travel to the Manhattan Beach headquarters required up to several times a month.

What You’ll Do:

• Own our accounting operations, including, general ledger maintenance, accruals, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, revenue recognition under ASC606, and other accounting activities.
• Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes including detailed analysis and reconciliation of all general ledger accounts and preparation of consolidated financial statements in compliance with U.S. GAAP to ensure the financial close process is completed accurately and on-time.
• Build and manage relationships with external auditors, accounting/tax advisors, and lead the annual financial audit.
• Oversee tax compliance ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations for nonprofit entities as well as applicable US Sales Tax and foreign taxes such as VAT.  
• Partner with the executive management team, to provide advice on financial implications of business activities.
• Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
• Partner with other functional areas to ensure the company’s processes and procedures include the appropriate level of financial discipline
• Work closely with the product, sales, and marketing teams to capture individual product ROI and manage costs.
• Partner with the FP&A function to ensure alignment on monthly variance analysis, quarterly forecasting, and the annual budgeting process.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of accounting software, billing software, forecasting tools and supporting databases, as needed.
• Developing and monitoring key financial performance metrics.
• Manage the monthly and quarterly reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
• Be an active partner in the Company’s fundraising activities.
• Timely delivery of ad hoc reporting and special projects as needed.
