Description

Be at the forefront of change and become a part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team in the University of Michigan-Flint’s Occupational Therapy Department in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences! We are seeking applications for a Department Director to also serve as a tenure- or clinical-track associate professor in the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program. This hybrid position is 50% instructional and 50% administrative and requires regular presence on campus. The desired start date for this position is May 2025.

The College of Health Sciences is located in the William S. White Building on the beautiful UM-Flint campus. To learn more about the University of Michigan-Flint campus, click here. Currently, faculty in the College of Health Sciences are required to report to campus minimally two days a week. This is subject to change based on program, department, college or university needs.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Department Director Duties (.5 FTE)

  • Provide visionary leadership and set the strategic direction for the Occupational Therapy Department.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
  • Conduct timely and critical evaluation of faculty and staff.
  • Develop and manage budgets, resources and personnel with assistance from Business Administrators in the Dean’s Office.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance academic programs and research activities.
  • Maintain ACOTE accreditation for the OTD program.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Engage in fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and donor relations. 
  • Represent the department within the university and to external stakeholders. 
  • Actively and constructively participate in the CHS Leadership Team. 
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and accreditation standards. 
  • Mentor and support the professional development of faculty and staff.
  • Provide functional and administrative supervision of all faculty and staff in the department.

Principal Faculty Duties (.5 FTE)

  • Serve as a core faculty member within the Occupational Therapy Department

Teaching

As assigned by the Dean, teach within the Occupational Therapy Department maintaining high teaching standards.

Scholarship

Provide guidance to Occupational Therapy faculty in developing their scholarship plans. Engages in scholarship according to the College of Health Sciences scholarship requirements for tenure- or clinical-track faculty.

Service

All CHS faculty members are expected to provide service to the University, college, department, profession and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional service contributions to the Flint and regional community are valued as well as national and international contributions. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Possesses the needed experience and education to be considered an associate tenure- or clinical-track professor at time of application: 
    • Earned post-professional clinical doctorate accepted, academic doctorate preferred, in Occupational Therapy or related discipline. 
    • Eligibility for Associate Tenure-Track Professor or Associate Clinical-Track Professor upon hire, college review process required.
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct impactful research independently or as part of a research team consistent with tenure- or clinical-track appointments.
    • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the field of Occupational Therapy, including 6 years in a full-time academic appointment teaching at the graduate level in Occupational Therapy
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Occupational Therapist in Michigan. 
  • Commitment to shared governance.
  • Commitment to DEI efforts within the department, college, and university.
  • Proven understanding of:
    • (1) Current trends in higher education
    • (2) Occupational therapy professional and post- professional education
    • (3) Contemporary clinical practices.
  • Demonstrated active involvement and commitment to promoting a working and learning environment that is diverse / multicultural.
  • Demonstrated record of effective leadership and management experience in key areas of responsibility, i.e. ACOTE accred
