Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Director of International Student Services, the International Student Advisor will provide high-quality immigration guidance to international students and promote their full participation and integration into the university community. This position is called upon to interpret internal university policies interfacing with federal immigration regulations affecting international students at LSU and will share the student workload with the student advising team. This position plays an integral role at LSU by providing high-level advising for international students and promoting their full participation and integration into the university community.
Job Responsibilities:
(70%)
- Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and an ARO for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State’s reporting requirements impacting international students
- Counsel international students, and university staff, and faculty on a broad range of immigration and intercultural issues.
- Advise international students and scholars on personal, academic, career, social, and cultural matters.
- Assist with meeting the ongoing reporting and compliance requirements of immigration regulations using the SEVIS systems.
- In collaboration with other departments and external organizations, assist with providing services and support for international students, and their families.
- Share the document processing workload with advisors in ISS. This includes pre-arrival immigration forms, SSN, and driver’s license requests, among other things.
- Remain current on relevant immigration regulations and policies impacting the international student populations at LSU.
- Assist with the preparation and delivery of workshops, presentations, and other programming related to immigration services for international students and scholars

- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of Sunapsis to maximized efficiency, accuracy, and outstanding customer service
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving issues with Sunapsis, university data base systems, and SEVIS and the dataflow among them.
- Assist with translating business needs into Sunapsis workflows.

- Assist with other duties as assigned by the Director of International Student Services.
Additional Requirements:
FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience
Specific Experience:
- 1-3 years working with international students at a university setting.
- Detailed knowledge of F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant visa regulations
- General understanding of other U.S. immigration laws and classifications
