Impact You'll Make:
As part of the Advanced Clearance Design Team, the Lead Design Engineer – Gas Turbine Clearances is responsible for designing and optimizing the gas turbine operating clearances to achieve target performance levels. Clearance engineering is a system level design challenge to minimize operating clearances for maximum performance while minimizing rub durability risks. Position offers excellent gas turbine system level design experience and broad knowledge of components and gas turbine operation.
The lead clearance design engineer will partner with the Technical Leader (TL), People Leader (PL), and Controlled Title Holder (CTH) community to ensure that the clearances meet Product and Design Practice CTQs, as well as assist in developing and/or improving existing design processes and tools.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Ownership of Gas Turbine Clearances for New Product Introduction (NPI) programs and Matured designs.
- Collaboration with cross functional / cross-organization teams including the Thermal sciences, Test engineering, Systems engineering, Manufacturing, and Product Definition teams
- Perform Gas Turbine system level deflection analysis to determine radial and axial clearance requirements for all critical gas turbine rotating to stationary sealing interfaces and tip clearances. Specify all clearances and rotor alignment requirements for the gas turbine.
- Develop system models and perform ANSYS FE thermal/mechanical analysis to determine transient and steady state deflections of machine.
- Assess clearance levels relative to historical build data, in service clearance measurements, and field rub data to correlate and validate predictions.
- Identify opportunities to improve clearances for improved performance and improved reliability. Support Digital Thread and Digital Twin activities to develop customer oriented, clearance centric business opportunities.
- Conduct variation-based assessments to develop probabilistic clearance analyses. Provide guidance to the manufacturing, services, and outage teams on methods and tools developments

- Perform field validation testing to verify predictions and optimize clearance settings.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in Gas Turbine Design or Clearances.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or similar engineering degree from an accredited university or college OR equivalent knowledge and experience.

Desired Characteristics
- Preference will be given to current Gas Power Engineering employees
- Advocacy of lean principles and innovative thought process
- Experience with hardware design, drawing development, and statistical tolerancing.
- ANSYS Finite Element analysis experience with 2D/3D structural and / or heat transfer analysis.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills. Mindset for creating and improving processes or designs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- System level thinker and/or enjoys the big picture interactions.
- Familiarity with drafting standards or practices and geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T)
For U.S. based candidates only, for purposes of complying with U.S. pay transparency requirements, The base pay range for this position is $88,600.00 - 147,600.00 USD per year.
The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for a 10% performance bonus.
*The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
