About the role

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

As a Senior Engineer in Advanced Nanoscale Fabrication, you will be the architect of our Silicon-Vacancy (SiV) quantum memory nodes. You aren't just running a process; you are maturing the very hardware—diamond-based photonic interconnects—that allows quantum processors to talk to each other.

You will sit at the intersection of deep physics and high-end manufacturing. One day you might be troubleshooting a complex etch at the nanoscale; the next, you’ll be collaborating with world-leading physicists to translate a theoretical design into a repeatable, high-yield fabrication flow in our Boston cleanroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Process Development & Optimization: Design, refine, and scale nanofabrication processes (including Photolithography, Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), and etching) to ensure reproducibility, yield, and optimal performance.
  • Tool Expertise: Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain complex cleanroom equipment, while assisting with installations and upgrades to support advanced fabrication processes.
  • Project Leadership: Drive innovation and lead cross-functional teams from concept through to functional hardware, ensuring alignment on project goals and timelines.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Work alongside multidisciplinary teams, encompassing physicists, scientists, and engineers, while providing training on standard operating procedures (SOPs) and tool usage to junior engineers.
  • Documentation & Quality: Create and maintain detailed SOPs, ensuring robust process control and adherence to high standards of quality and safety throughout all fabrication activities.
  • Technical Consultation: Offer design-for-fabrication guidance and serve as the key technical expert on specific processes or equipment, facilitating effective communication between teams.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Cleanroom & Fabrication Mastery: Extensive hands-on experience in Class 100/1000 cleanroom environments with expert-level knowledge of Photolithography, PVD, etching, dielectric processes, and blade dicing.
  • Advanced Metrology Skills: Proficiency in characterizing nanoscale structures using SEM/FIB, AFM, and both optical and physical profilometry.
  • Chemical & Process Safety: A deep understanding of the chemical processes and safety protocols required when working with solvents, bases, and acids.
  • Analytical Problem-Solving: A methodical approach to troubleshooting complex technical hurdles and managing fabrication projects from concept to completion.
  • Meticulous Precision: An unwavering focus on detail, particularly regarding process repeatability, documentation, and maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Effective Communication: The ability to distill complex technical data into actionable insights and collaborate effectively with diverse internal stakeholders.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Innovative Mindset: Enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology in quantum devices and photonics, coupled with a proactive approach to driving advancements in nanoscale fabrication.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A strong team player willing to engage and share knowledge across diverse groups, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Dedication to Quality: A commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety, reflecting your professionalism and attention to detail in all aspects of your work.
  • Mentorship Enthusiasm: A passion for mentoring and empowering junior engineers, contributing to their development and the overall success of the team.
