OVERVIEW: Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) seeks a highly motivated and experienced CFO who will be responsible for the financial management of and strategy for LANWT. The CFO will supervise the accounting staff, currently comprised of 5 employees. The CFO is an integral member of the firm’s senior management team. The position requires demonstrated knowledge and experience in business and financial management and government grant fund accounting. The successful CFO candidate should have a passion for achieving equal access to justice for the poor through the provision of high-quality legal advocacy to individuals and community groups eligible for our services.
DESCRIPTION: LANWT is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides high-quality free civil legal services to low-income persons and communities in 114 counties in North and West Texas. LANWT has 20 branch offices and several community-based locations throughout its service area. LANWT has over 250 employees and operates an annual budget of over $20 million compromised of federal and state grants, private and public foundation funding, and corporate and individual donations. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will be based in LANWT’s administrative office located in Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth is ranked the 16th largest and one of the fastest growing cities in the nation and is the second-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CFO will also report information directly to the LANWT Board of Directors upon request.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The CFO is responsible for the financial management of the organization and assists with all strategic and programmatic matters as they relate to budget management, fiscal compliance and oversight, cost benefit analysis, forecasting needs and operating as the chief financial spokesperson within the organization. This position requires strong technical financial skills and planning, decision-making, excellent communication skills and prior supervisory experience. The CFO is expected to recommend and implement high-level system changes, as appropriate, be responsible for finances and budgeting, be knowledgeable about the day-to-day fiscal issues, and supervise, train and evaluate the accounting staff. The CFO will advise the CEO, senior management staff and the Board of Directors on financial and budgeting issues related to the management of the firm. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, review, test and implement internal financial control procedures.
- Prepare essential reports using accounting software. Ability to review and recommend updates to or improved accounting software.
- Knowledgeable of and monitoring adherence to accounting rules and regulations, financial regulations of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and all other applicable regulations and rules for grants.
- Assist CEO in obtaining pre-approval from LSC on purchases over $25,000.
- Prepare the annual and mid-year budgets for CEO and Board of Directors review and approval.
- Attend all Board of Director meetings and meetings of the Board’s Budget, Finance and Audit Committee and prepare financial statements and narratives on LANWT’s financial position.
- Prepare request for proposals for selection of new auditors and assist the Board’s Audit Committee with the selection process.
- Responsible for preparing, coordinating and assisting in independent and external audits, including preparing information for auditors, responding to inquiries, and reviewing and verifying all information in the audit reports.
- Responsible for the review and preparation of worksheets for the IRS Form 990 and the timely filing of same.
- Assist in coordinating the flow of information and reporting between the various departments that interact with the accounting department.
- Review and approve cash flow statements, journal entries, general ledger entries, the accounting reports prepared by branch office administrative secretaries.
- Responsible for reviewing and approving bank reconciliations for all LANWT bank accounts, including those of all branch offices.
- Maintain communication and relationships with LANWT banking centers.
- Review and approve purchase orders and review and sign checks, as appropriate.
- Review and approve charges to corporate credit card.
- Review reconciliations of grant
