Job Summary
The Medical Assistant In Training role is an entry-level position designed to provide hands-on exposure to both clinical and administrative responsibilities in a healthcare setting. Under close supervision, you will observe and assist medical assistants and providers while learning key skills such as patient care, documentation, and office operations.
This role is ideal for individuals exploring a future career in healthcare and looking to gain real-world experience in a clinical environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma/equivalent required
- Maryland resident
- Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18–24)
- Experience:
- No prior experience required
- Licensure/Certification:
- Current BLS (CPR) certification required
- Skills & Abilities:
- Basic computer skills
- Strong communication and willingness to learn
- Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision
- Interest in healthcare and patient care
- Ability to interact professionally with patients and staff
What You’ll Do
- Observe and assist medical assistants with clinical tasks such as taking vital signs and preparing patients
- Support administrative duties including answering phones and scheduling
- Perform follow-up calls to patients as directed by providers
- Help coordinate patient appointments, tests, and referrals
- Prepare exam rooms by cleaning, stocking, and organizing supplies
- Assist with cleaning and sterilizing instruments and disposing of contaminated materials
- Support general office and clinic operations
What the Job is Really Like
- This is a learning-focused role, where much of your time will be spent observing and assisting rather than working independently
- You’ll be exposed to both clinical and administrative tasks, giving you a broad view of how a medical office operates
- The role requires following directions closely and working under constant supervision
- You’ll interact with patients regularly, requiring professionalism and good communication skills
- Some tasks are routine (cleaning rooms, stocking supplies), but they are essential to patient care
- The pace can vary from steady to busy depending on patient volume
- You’ll be working in a clinical environment, which may include exposure to blood and bodily fluids (with proper safety precautions)
- This role is a stepping stone—you are expected to learn, observe, and build foundational skills
Work Environment & Demands
- Outpatient clinic or medical office setting
- Combination of standing, walking, and light physical activity (see physical demands on page 2)
- Frequent interaction with patients and healthcare staff
- Exposure to clinical environments, including biohazard materials (with PPE)
- Requires attention to detail, communication, and ability to follow protocols
- Structured environment with supervision and guidance
