Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.

We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 10.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.

Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.

Position requires a wide range of technical and professional experience in building design/construction, construction cost estimating, furniture and office equipment, asset verification accounting principles and a general knowledge of construction. Position reviews and understands plans and specifications, develops time schedules, oversees architects and engineers.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analyzes construction projects to review architectural, mechanical and electrical items, providing problem resolution.
  • Monitors and coordinates projects to assure completion in accordance with schedule.
  • Estimates project cost, evaluates proposed changes to projects and approves payment.
  • Maintains compliance with building and safety codes and other regulations, reviews engineering and architectural drawings and specification.
  • Directs construction supervisors and monitors the progress & construction activities including delivery and use of material, machinery, equipment & vehicles.
  • Understands mechanical, electrical and structural systems and provides owners review of operations.
  • Participates in project meetings and committee meetings.
  • Monitors project cost.
  • Directs, counsels and advises other departments on all building planning matters.
  • Consults with departments to qualify and quantify specific facility requirements.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness of specific project requirements and recommend the most appropriate and cost effective solution for completing the work.
  • Develops and maintains specific project budgets which annually exceed $15 million.
  • Develops and maintains the project schedules.
  • Advises appropriate authorities of major changes in project schedules or budgets, which affect the overall construction work or departmental operations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience in construction.
  • This position requires a wide range of technical and professional experience in building design/construction, construction cost estimating, furniture and office equipment, asset verification, accounting principles and a general knowledge of construction.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate in a fast-paced environment with tight completion time frames.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Project management and leadership experience desired.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency in MS Office suite, including spreadsheets and databases in a Windows environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and productivity.
  • Prefer experience working in a large, highly structured environment with complex teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate in a fast-paced environment with tight completion time frames.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or engineering and six years of related experience.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
