Job Description Qualifications:

Boeing’s Research and Technology (BR&T) team is seeking a Materials and Processes Engineer-Reliability Physics to join our team in El Segundo, California.

We are looking for a broad range of experience including Associate or Mid-Level Materials and Processes Engineers.

This role primarily involves conducting RCCA (root cause correction action), thermal analysis, etc. on advanced modeling of structures, assemblies and hardware.

This position contains work that is often extremely urgent with many competing priorities. The successful candidate will need to be able to execute under pressure and prioritize individual tasks appropriately. In addition, the desire to work on novel, challenging problems to find a solution is a plus!

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop CAD models from drawings and photos

  • Develop and/or select appropriate material properties

    • Develop and/or select appropriate nonlinear material models (plasticity, creep, viscoplasticity, hyperelasticity, etc)

    • Literature and research review of material properties

    • Development, oversight, and interpretation of material testing in laboratory setting

  • Develop finite element models of designs and anomalous conditions

    • Multiphysics analyses typically including thermal-mechanical stresses but may also include other forms of physical behavior

    • Define appropriate boundary conditions to represent problem

    • Define appropriate mesh densities to resolve problem details without excessive run time

    • Debug models by altering solver settings

  • Define and evaluate failure criteria (fatigue, maximum stress/strain, crack propagation, etc.)

  • Write clear, concise reports with annotated figures describing model results.  Brief them to high level customers

  • Defend results upon peer review including internal and customer consultants

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. TS/SCI clearance Post -Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 1+ years of experience with Finite Element Models (FEM)

  • 1+ years of experience with finite element modeling structural analysis methods and tools

  • 1+ years of experience with failure analysis (performing or review)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or materials and science engineering (with a stress analysis focus)

  • Fundamental understanding of differential equations underlying models

  • Experience with electronics

  • Experience conveying complex problems and solutions to high level customers

Typical Education/Experience:

Associate (Level 2)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Mid-Level (Level 3)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
