Sr. Managing Director, Litigation, Government Relations, Risk & Insurance
PelotonAbout the role
ABOUT THE ROLE
Peloton is seeking an experienced and highly strategic, nimble, and collaborative leader with 12+ years of experience at a top law firm or in-house litigation practice to join our Legal team. You will directly oversee Peloton’s litigation matters, Member disputes, government investigations, and the risk and insurance program. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of navigating and resolving complex litigation and investigations, anticipating potential risk areas, working cross-functionally and pragmatically with business partners, and partnering effectively with outside counsel. You will manage a team and report to the Chief Legal Officer.
YOUR DAILY IMPACT AT PELOTON
- Manage litigation matters (e.g., securities and consumer class actions, products liability, commercial), government investigations (SEC, DOJ, State AG), and product complaints from inception to favorable resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify potential legal, policy, or safety issues, and provide practical advice and risk mitigation recommendations consistent with strategic objectives.
- Craft and negotiate favorable agreements, including commercial contracts, licenses, and settlement agreements.
- Assist with litigation diligence in connection with potential business acquisitions, and support post-acquisition case management for completed transactions.
- Implement strategies and develop expertise on current and emerging laws, regulations, and industry trends; plan, direct, and review related Peloton policies and educate internal stakeholders.
- Develop regular updates on pending disputes and investigations for the CLO, Board of Directors, and auditors.
- Identify and partner with results-oriented outside counsel who have the expertise and creativity to deliver high quality representation, exceptional client service, and superior cost efficiency, and who share Peloton’s commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Enhance the legal team’s operational controls by closely managing outside counsel’s budget and spend, partnering with finance and accounting to accurately and timely budget and accrue for litigation and investigation matters, driving successful implementation of cost control initiatives, and maximizing insurance coverage and indemnification where available.
- Collaborate with the legal leadership team to drive a culture of high performance and mutual accountability.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer.
YOU BRING TO PELOTON
- 12+ years of experience at a top law firm or in-house litigation practice; secondment or in-house experience preferred.
- Experience across a broad range of litigation and government investigation matters, including consumer and securities class action, commercial, product liability, and soft IP cases from inception through trial and appeal.
- Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and written and verbal communication skills, with proven experience in cross-functional collaboration and ability to advise on risk mitigation strategies and translate complicated legal concepts into “plain English” for your business partners.
- Independent and strategic thinker who is a strong team player (no job is too small or too large) and has a bias for being a “doer” and getting things done.
- Strong business acumen, creative problem solver, and superb project management and organizational skills with the ability to set result-oriented goals and execute on them.
- Track record of thriving in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment, being comfortable with ambiguity, processing feedback quickly, and pivoting as necessary with speed and grace.
- Experience building and leading teams, including assessing core competencies, providing productive feedback and professional development opportunities, and encouraging a growth mindset.
- Experience enhancing operational controls, including by partnering effectively with outside counsel, managing budgets against spend, and driving cost control initiatives.
- Member in good standing of the NY, CA, or comparable State Bar.
