SALARY:
$23.40 - 29.25 per hour
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, this position acts in a lead capacity to recognize and identify sports fields maintenance including preventative, routine and problems that occur.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate activities of a crew assigned to athletic field maintenance including preventative, predictive and emergency maintenance of athletic field infrastructure.
- Oversee and monitor the team’s compliance with regulations related to herbicides, fertilization, and irrigating.
- Oversee and provide initial response to calls for service from staff, assess maintenance needs, and take appropriate action or route work orders to appropriate staff.
- Prepare technical specifications for renovation work, repairs and typical work performed by outside contractors.
- Manage and coordinate the work of those outside contractors including monitor and securing bids.
- Stay abreast of current trends and best management practices on sports field maintenance by reviewing publications and attending local training opportunities.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Work independently and solve problems while evaluating and prioritizing work projects. Prioritize team’s job assignments and coordinate work with other staff.
- Work around potentially hazardous materials (fertilizer, herbicides, etc.) requiring the use of specialized equipment.
- Train staff on various equipment such as chain saws, edgers, string trimmers, pruners, blowers, etc.
- Purchase, maintain and manage parts, supplies and small tools/equipment.
- Perform record keeping functions on computerized work order systems and Purchasing Card transactions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of purchasing inventory control principles and procedures.
- Knowledge of fungicides, growth regulators, insecticides and other pesticides and the appropriate timetable of application.
- Knowledge of pest management guidelines and standards.
- Knowledge of project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues. Knowledge of effective supervisory practices.
- Knowledge of sports field irrigation system design, operation, maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of advanced athletic field maintenance procedures, techniques and standards, including design and construction.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and development of athletic facilities.
- Knowledge of horticultural processes and practices related to turf maintenance.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of safe handling, application procedures, and storage of fertilizers, pesticides, and chemical preparations.
- Skill in communicating with city staff and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill in propagating turf on various recreational surfaces.
- Skill in developing and maintaining athletic surfaces in a manner prescribed for the specified athletic event. Skill in directing and supervising the work of subordinates.
- Skill in working in a team atmosphere and participating on a variety of departmental and City-wide committees to enhance the provision of all City services.
- Ability to be used as a resource by other staff members.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral and written communication. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement.
- Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to operation a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, various computer software, copiers, telephone, fax machine and calculator.
- Ability to work outdoors and withstand extremes of weather and temperature.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in all conditions, safely, with the general public.
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to coordinate with volunteers, citizens, citizen groups, youth sports associations, administrative staff, recreation staff and other departments
- Ability to respond to requests for service, complaints and compliments with a proper course of action.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, among the general public in all conditions.
- This is a safety sensitive position.
