Description
Purpose: Provide sign language interpreting (ASL) for interns and MTC staff who are deaf or hard of hearing, based on the preferred language of the individual intern/staff. Interpreting could be used in situations where there are frequent opportunities to ask for repetition or clarification with terminology or concepts included in orientation, training, meetings or interactions, as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Provides receptive and expressive communication for DHH interns during orientation, training, meetings and job placement as well as for staff during MTC training, meetings and work/social interaction.
- Shares relevant information about the DHH student’s classroom performance and/or communication needs with appropriate members of the Innovation or eMerge leadership team in a professional and objective manner.
- Provides communication access for adults who are deaf or hard of hearing during MTC meetings and events, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Establishes and maintains positive and professional relationships with all stakeholders.
- Establishes, in conjunction with the appropriate stakeholders, a physical setting (lighting, noise level, distance, line of sight) that promotes effective interaction and communication.
- Prepares for interpreting assignments, when possible, by acquiring, reviewing and researching topics/materials being covered.
- Performs all job duties under the guidelines of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf/National Association of the Deaf (RID/NAD) Code of Professional Conduct and/or the Educational EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters.
- Maintains professional boundaries when communicating with interns, staff, leadership and coworkers.

- All other duties as required of this position and assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Completed and passed the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) written and performance exams or completion of the performance portion of the EIPA with a 3.5+ and a passing score on the EIPA Written Test is required
- Minimum of three years of interpreting in a paid or volunteer capacity required.
- Ability to interpret concepts in sign language (ASL) as demonstrated through an interview with designated Innovation staff and documented experience as a certified Interpreter.
- Disability sensitivity, working with diverse groups of people one-on-one and in groups,
- Ability to keep interpreting information confidential.
- Fluency in American Sign Language and Deaf culture.
- Computer skills to include intermediate knowledge in MS Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Is culturally sensitive, disability sensitive, and socially perceptive. Establish and maintain positive and collaborative relationships, both internally and externally. Must pass Level 2 background screening, local law enforcement and drug screening. Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
