Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate Director, Community Engagement for the Center for Social Concern (CSC), housed on the Homewood Campus. The Center for Social Concern (CSC) fosters a lifelong commitment to active citizenship by integrating education, action, and reflection into community-focused programming for Hopkins students within Baltimore City. The CSC leadership team is comprised of one Executive Director, one Deputy Director, and two Associate Directors, to support the staff and student leadership within programs. The Associate Director role will focus on community engagement, and assessment will play a pivotal role in the creation, evaluation, and enhancement of opportunities within the CSC. This position will be responsible for leading community engagement initiatives, as well as, supervising a team of individuals who implement community-engaged programming in the areas of federal work-study, internships, direct service, and tutoring.
The Associate Director will provide oversight, leadership, and support to staff in community engagement roles and to students engaged in CSC direct service opportunities. A primary role will be to provide programmatic direction for the suite of CSC programs related to direct service and engagement between JHU students and the Baltimore City community. This includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Baltimore First program. Baltimore First is the Center for Social Concern’s primary community engagement program offered during the academic year. Committed to utilizing a sustainable service model, Baltimore First matches groups of students to volunteer with the same Service Partner for the duration of a semester. In addition to weekly volunteering, Baltimore First members attend educational workshops, critical reflection sessions, cohort socials, and Baltimore-based community events. By coordinating accessible opportunities to engage with Baltimore and facilitating complementary education and reflection sessions, Baltimore First equips students to intentionally engage with diverse communities, promote awareness of Baltimore’s social equity ecosystem, build community both on and off campus, and inspire commitment to active citizenship. Along with the CSC staff, the Associate Director of Community Engagement will foster team-based initiatives and support the year-round community engagement programming that staff members are implementing. These roles include experience-based community service programs, civic engagement initiatives, tutoring, episodic direct service, and internship programs. With guidance from the Deputy Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing tools and processes for evaluating the effectiveness of the programs and working as part of the leadership to set direction for CSC programming and operations.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Programming 25%
- Lead and oversee the CSC Baltimore First program including the recruitment, onboarding, and training of the cohort of students each academic year.
- Supervise a team of Student Directors (establish action items and send reminders, mentorship, advocacy, removing barriers, liaising with CSC staff, supporting in goal setting and achievement, and professional development).
- Ensure CSC policies (risk management, child safety) and procedures are being followed.
- Provide curriculum/content for educational workshops including professional development for Student Directors and Shift Leads.
- Establish program calendar/timeline.
- Steward Service Partner relationships.
- Manage transportation, budget, and financial tasks.
- In coordination with the CSC staff, lead program evaluation and contribute to internal and external reporting.
- Support university-wide community engagement efforts led by the CSC.
- Coordinating events, workshops, programs, etc for CSC community partners
- Other duties as assigned.
Management 25%
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of full-time staff members responsible for the implementation of the CSC programming and operations.
- Supervise the CSC office interns, supporting community engagement initiatives, as necessary.
- Advise approximately five CSC-affiliated student service organizations each year.
- Serve as the co-lead of the CSC’s training team in coordination with CSC staff.
- Create and support a team-based culture of staff members, focusing on programmatic excellence in community engagement for the CSC.
- Oversee the management of multiple program budgets.
- Oversee the process of providing the CSC’s Executive Director with programmatic details needed for fundraising, strategic planning, and assessment.
