About the role

Position Summary

 

The Guest Services/Facility Monitor, Recreation and Physical Education position will primarily assist the Recreation & Physical Education Facilities staff in various capacities, including monitoring facility access, providing customer service across two recreation facilities, performing facility monitoring duties, and supervising facility reservations. The position reports to the Director of Recreation Facilities and the Assistant Director of Recreation Facilities & Reservations. This is a 19.9-hour-per-week position.

 

Qualifications

Work requires analytical, communication, and customer service skills generally acquired through two years of relevant work experience.

 

Essential Functions

  • Be able and willing to work all jobs within the recreation center: Facility Monitor, Front Desk, and/or Weight Room

  • Be able and willing to train incoming employees

  • Be willing and able to work in both Brodie and Wilson Recreation Centers

  • Be able to serve on the severe weather team as needed

  • Be able and willing to work up to 19.9 hours per week on a regular basis, including covering shifts for other employees

  • Be able and willing to work all Recreation and Physical Education special events

  • Be physically able to lead the Emergency Action Plan

  • Recreation facilities are open from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Staff may be asked to work various shifts; nights and weekends are required

  • Be an example of departmental standards

  • Attend 2 focus group meetings per year

  • Assist with facility in-service trainings and meetings

  • Support and help progress the university and department’s commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion

Day-to-Day Duties and Responsibilities

 

Facility Monitor

  • Fill in for front desk and weight room staff when needed

  • Routinely check all doors, alarms, locker rooms, and bathrooms

  • Address cleanliness of cardio areas and machines

  • Track and enforce day locker policies (including locker rooms)

  • Enforce all facility policies and procedures

  • Assist front desk staff during peak times

  • Follow all opening and closing procedures

  • Carry out security measures

  • Respond to all building emergencies (accidents, injuries, inclement weather, etc.)

  • Execute setup of activity areas for internal and external groups as needed

  • Provide support for special events as required

  • Ensure outstanding customer service

  • Collaborate with other areas of the department to achieve goals

  • Promote a safe, clean, functional, and marketable facility

  • Perform other work as assigned

 

Guest Services Attendant

  • Serve as the first point of contact at the centers; greet members and guests upon arrival and acknowledge their departure

  • Check members, guests, and visitors in and out of the facilities

  • Monitor flow of traffic entering and exiting the facility

  • Ensure DukeCards and guest passes are current and valid for facility access

  • Address questions or concerns; refer issues to appropriate Recreation & Physical Education staff if needed

  • Follow procedures to register guests and visitors

  • Keep sign-in books and waivers updated for guests/visitors

  • Arrange and maintain the Lost & Found cabinet in an orderly and organized manner

  • Review the daily room reservation schedule

  • Complete all necessary forms

  • Check out loan equipment and ensure it is returned and does not leave the facility

 

Training Requirements

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification required
