New York University Tandon School of Engineering

Cybersecurity for Democracy at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking to hire a full time Senior Policy Researcher to work in the Cybersecurity for Democracy Lab with Professor Damon McCoy.

Cybersecurity for Democracy is a multi-university center for problem-driven research and research-driven policy. We conduct cutting-edge research to better understand the distorting effects of algorithms and AI tools on large online networks and work with platforms and regulators to help all parties understand the implications of our findings and develop solutions.

Expectations

Candidate will be responsible for leading the Lab’s research on advancing policy solutions forhow social media, AI-powered algorithms, and Generative AI affect political discourse, polarization, and democracy. Candidate will work directly with the Lab’s researchers to translate research into policy and impact by educating the public, tech platforms, and policymakers on actionable solutions to address these challenges The research will focus on crafting recommendations for what technology companies, legislators, and regulators can do to better address these public harms. Their research will contribute to developing and proposing effective policies to improve tech accountability and safety..  We seek applications from scholars who have a strong track record of conducting research at intersection of policy and technology with a focus on working towards making technology safer and more trustworthy. The ideal candidate has an understanding of legislative movements in the tech accountability space, online platforms' policies, a demonstrated background in tech policy, social media systems and companies' effects on public safety and democracy and a strong record of advancing tech policy solutions and publishing in media and other outlets

Salary:

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is$190,000-$230,000 depending on the candidate’s experience and qualification.

Start Date:

Expected start date and period of employment: Expected start date is January 1, 2025. This position is expected to be for 12 months.

Qualifications

Candidates should have at least a MA/MS in Public Policy or a related field and at least 10 years of related experience. Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.
