About the role

Description

The Drumline Instructor is responsible for designing and leading a dynamic, high-quality drumline program for high school youth (grades 9–12). This role focuses on developing students’ technical percussion skills, musical discipline, and teamwork through engaging rehearsals and performance opportunities. The instructor will collaborate with site staff to plan, implement, and grow the program, while maintaining high standards of safety, consistency, and creativity. The Drumline Instructor plays a key role in cultivating leadership, school pride, and community engagement through music.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement a structured drumline program tailored to youth in grades 9–12.
  • Provide in-person group instruction in marching percussion techniques, rhythmic development, and performance preparation.
  • Build a positive and inclusive culture, reinforcing discipline, collaboration, and commitment.
  • Develop lesson plans, warm-ups, drills, and cadences appropriate to student skill levels and performance goals.
  • Prepare youth for participation in performances, school events, showcases, and community programs.
  • Maintain, organize, and inventory all BGCMLA drumline instruments and equipment; coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Support recruitment and retention of high school members; encourage consistent attendance and active participation.
  • Collaborate with site staff and other program areas to align drumline goals with organizational outcomes, while actively referring and connecting youth to additional club opportunities that support a well-rounded and enriching experience.
  • Provide constructive feedback and individualized coaching to support student growth and confidence.
  • Track attendance and program outcomes; submit timely attendance reports and other data as requested.
  • Support the creation of promotional materials and media content to showcase the program (videos, photos, etc.).
  • Accompany students on field trips or performance opportunities when applicable.
  • Help plan and coordinate culminating performances, parades, or showcases.
  • Support with performances at organization-wide events such as galas, fundraisers, and ceremonies.
  • Maintain effective relationships with members and parents.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings that advance organizational goals.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled with anticipated graduation date 
  • Combined experience and / or formal training equivalent to a minimum of three years where: There is experience working with youth and knowledge of youth development; Formal training, and / or experience teaching youth musical instruments.
  • Possess a valid drivers’ license and pass motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Pass criminal background check.
  • Pass (negative result) a TB test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience teaching or directing a drumline, marching band, or percussion ensemble.
  • Proficient in various marching percussion instruments (snare, bass, tenor drums, cymbals) and techniques.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications
  • Prior experience working in a Boys & Girls Club.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of drumline techniques, marching percussion pedagogy, and rehearsal processes, including instruction in snare, bass, tenor drums, and cymbals. Understands principles of musical development, rhythm, and ensemble coordination.
  • Skilled in creative planning and leading engaging drumline practices, implementing high-quality youth programming, and managing group performance projects from concept to execution.
  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate high school youth, including addressing behavioral challenges in a positive and constructive manner. Demonstrated strength in building relationships with teens and their families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff across programs, referring and connecting youth to additional opportunities for a well-rounded Club experience.
  • Professional demeanor with strong classroom management, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire, mentor, and positively influence young people through music and teamwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING

  • Travel between Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required
