The Pharmacy Clinical Specialist – Cardiac ICU is a newly created role at Mercy Hospital, reflecting continued growth, rising patient acuity, and expanded cardiac and critical care services. This highly integrated, decentralized position is primarily assigned to the Cardiac ICU and collaborates closely with physicians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and multidisciplinary care teams to support complex, critically ill cardiac patients. The specialist participates in daily interdisciplinary rounds, provides advanced clinical pharmacy consultation, and plays a foundational role in shaping and advancing Cardiac ICU pharmacy services at Mercy. Occasional inpatient operational coverage is included, offering a well-rounded opportunity to contribute to both clinical excellence and the evolving needs of a dynamic hospital pharmacy team.

A caregiver in this position works Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm or 6:00am to 2:30pm. Weekend rotations occur every 12 weeks and include one holiday per year.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Routinely and continually provide pharmaceutical care for patients, considering their age and clinical condition. 
  • Provide general and patient specific drug information to patients, physicians, nurses and, and other health care professionals. 
  • Support Clinical Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care to patients by direct interaction and formal educational programs. 
  • Maintain expertise in areas of practice through continual learning, journal review and other educational activities. 
  • Educate Clinical Pharmacists, Technicians, Pharmacy Students, Post-Graduate Trainees and other caregivers in Pharmacotherapy within in the specialty area. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • PharmD or Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of Pharmacy 
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or eligible within 90 days of hire   
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) and completion of a Board of Pharmacy approved course in the administration of immunizations or certification obtained within 90 days of hire (if administering immunizations) 
  • Completion of a Post-Graduate Year 2 Residency (PGY2) or fellowship OR completion of a Post-Graduate Year 1 Residency (PGY-1) and two years of experience as a Clinical Specialist or an equivalent role, including providing pharmaceutical care and performing pharmacotherapeutic monitoring for at least 50% of time in the specialty area OR four years of experience as a Clinical Specialist or an equivalent role, including providing pharmaceutical care and performing pharmacotherapeutic monitoring for at least 50% of time in the specialty area
