Description
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Comparative Ophthalmology. The successful candidate will have expertise in ophthalmology practice in multiple species and a passion for teaching.
Responsibilities will include clinical, didactic and laboratory teaching of ophthalmology to professional students, interns, and residents at the university, and participation in continuing education. Participation in clinical or basic research is encouraged commensurate with appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to add to the department’s reputation by participation in the teaching, service, and research programs of the college. Start-up funds are available to help develop clinical skills and research competence.
The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is a fully equipped facility and is equipped with extensive therapeutic and diagnostic equipment including a new state-of-the-art operating microscope; a phacoemulsification unit (Alcon Centurion); CO2 and diode lasers (including photodynamic therapy); liquid nitrogen and nitrous oxide cryosurgical units; electrodiagnostic equipment, multiple ultrasound modalities (12 – 50 MHz), and MRI and CT. The ophthalmology service is supported by 3 board-certified ophthalmologists, 2 residents and 2 licensed veterinary technicians. The ophthalmology caseload is high volume and uniquely diverse. In addition to dogs and cats, horses, and farm animals, the service sees a large variety and number of exotic pets and wildlife, as well as animals from the Knoxville Zoological Gardens, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The department includes tenure and clinical track faculty, including board-certified specialists in anesthesiology, behavior, cardiology, dermatology, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, dentistry, oncology, radiology, sports medicine, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Several pathologists at UT have a strong interest in comparative ophthalmology. The Veterinary Medical Center also has a social work program to support our staff and clients. Additionally, there is great support from the wildlife/exotics, equine and farm animal faculty for patient care.
Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee flagship campus and is a beautiful and friendly place to live. It is a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as a number of dog-friendly state parks and recreation areas. Outdoor recreational opportunities include, but are not limited to, hiking, biking, trail running, climbing and water sports. Knoxville has a vibrant cultural downtown with excellent restaurants; bustling farmer’s markets; live music of all genres, ballet, and theater; frequent art and cultural festivals; and men’s and women’s sporting events.
Qualifications
Requirements for the applicant include the DVM/ or equivalent degree, completion of an ophthalmology residency and board certification or board eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with all of the sections in the hospital. Appointment at the time of hire will be commensurate with experience.
Tenure-track Associate Professors will have achieved and maintain a recognized record in disciplinary research/scholarship, have achieved and maintained a record of institutional and professional service, and show evidence that they work well with colleagues and students. In most cases they will have served as an assistant professor for at least five years.
Tenure Track Assistant Professors should show promise as teachers, show promise of developing a program in disciplinary research/scholarship commensurate with appointment, have a developing record of institutional and/or professional service, and show evidence that they work well with colleagues and students.
Clinical track faculty primarily provide instruction to students and house officers and practice patient care in their area of expertise. Clinical track faculty also participate in scholarly activities and service commensurate with their appointment. To be considered for a clinical associate professor appointment at hire, the candidate’s application must demonstrate that are a leading teacher and/or provider of public service in accordance with their primary assigned responsibilities.
