Scientific Vice President, Center for Early Cancer Detection Science - REMOTE

It is well-established that early detection of cancer though screenings significantly reduces mortality rates. However, consequential barriers relative to accessing cancer screening remain. Presently there is no centralized, end-to-end systematic approach to cancer screening; and access to timely screenings and early detection is detrimentally fragmented. To address this complex issue, the American Cancer Society is actively developing an organizational framework for a Center which seeks to elevate awareness, access, tools and resources to ensure that every person receives high-quality cancer screenings. The vision of the Center is a future where equitable access to cutting-edge cancer screening information, resources, and tests are a universal reality, while simultaneously enabling proactive health management and early detection. Through internal and external collaborations, the Center will leverage its legacy of early detection in a foundation based in research, advocacy, and patient services. The Center’s operating model is underpinned by a robust organizational infrastructure, serving as the foundational backbone for enterprise-wide strategic execution. The Center has a tri-level thematic framework inclusive of: 1. Science and Research, 2. Implementation, and 3. Policy and Economics. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The candidate will play a leading role in the American Cancer Society’s Enterprise-wide strategic direction in cancer screening, including research, guideline development, related policy, system, programmatic, quality improvement, management, and communication positions and initiatives. Contributes to both domestic and global efforts to promote cancer screening.  Conducts and collaborates on research related to cancer screening and publishes in high impact journals.  Seeks opportunities to present research on cancer screening at professional society meetings. As directed, represents the ACS in collaborations, initiatives, expert panels, etc. related to cancer screening and health services.

As directed, represents the Center in enterprise-wide guidance and oversight of the ACS process for formulating and disseminating all ACS public-facing, mission-related guidelines, including those related to cancer prevention and early detection.  This responsibility includes contributing to the process for generating evidence-based reviews, monitoring scientific evidence, and updating guidelines.

This role will increase the Center’s ability to provide strategic and operational expertise across all of ACS and represents the Society on issues related to cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment to internal and external groups, the media; state & federal elected legislatures and individual elected officials; state & federal agencies; medical/professional groups; and international health organizations, including health agencies of foreign countries. Chairs or serves on numerous national and international scientific advisory groups and committees. Will be expected to represent the ACS and interact with ACS partners at the highest level.

Leads R&D projects focused on addressing key issues in cancer control and chronic disease.  Actively contributes to the medical literature. When appropriate, represents the Society on occasions when the Center Director is not available.

This role will also contribute scientific expertise on prevention and early detection to the ACS Roundtables.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:          

• Conduct original research related to early cancer detection with emphasis on improving existing cancer screening or leading to new cancer screening programs. Conducts research with Discovery staff and external collaborators on early cancer detection, including new screening technologies and risk-stratification in screening to promote “equal treatment for equal risk.” Publish in leading scientific journals; Per Invitation, contribute articles and chapters on cancer screening and cancer epidemiology to leading medical journals, textbooks, and other professional education materials. Respond to media inquiries (national & local—TV, Radio, Print), and contribute discussion points and ACS position statements to accompany media alerts.
