Primary Responsibilities /Accountabilities/ Essential Functions:
- Assist Director of Public Safety in ensuring operating philosophy of law enforcement and campus safety aligns with the Christian mission and culture of the University.
- Manage the department personnel involving hiring, daily supervision, evaluation, and the resolution of problems on a day-to-day basis.
- Assist Federal, State, City, County agencies with investigations, and testify in court as needed.
- Direct investigations involving crimes, vehicle accidents, and Incident Reports (IRs) resulting in student conduct violations on/or adjacent to University property.
- Develop comprehensive reports concerning crime statistics, security initiatives and donation/disposal of lost and found property.
- Make decisions on University public safety matters or questions of University policy in the absence of the Public Safety Director.
- Inspect and review the activities of subordinates, equipment, and facilities condition, and maintain records pertaining thereto; ensure the quality and efficiency of process/systems through first-hand inspection and reports of subordinates.
- Partner with the Office of Emergency Management to facilitate disaster planning and training and organize the functions and activities of Public Safety personnel, staff, external security, and safety agencies in the event of an emergency response.
- Establish effective working relationship with local police, fire, emergency departments, federal agencies and neighborhood associations and equips designated public safety managers to maintain the relationships.
- Assist injured person(s) and as needed, lift, and carry injured person(s) to places of safety and/or medical attention. Render aid when necessary, including first aid, CPR, etc.
- Serve as operational head at events conducted by the University and/or the community.
- Develop, implement and document ‘in-service’ employee development programs, to include yearly mandated AZPOST proficiency and competency requirements. Focus on mitigating high liability.
- Direct training for all University Public Safety functions, carry out policies, rules and regulations of the University, Arizona state codes and statutes, Federal and local laws/ordinances which may include security vendors and/or staff.
- Assist with headcount budgeting and scheduling department staff, including overtime to ensure adequate campus security presence at all times.
- Oversee appropriate procurement/maintenance of equipment to include vehicles, weapons, ammunition, CEWs, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Demonstrated leadership qualities that foster a policing culture that is professional, transparent, self-monitoring and advances in-step with local, national, and global policing trends.
- Proven success in engaging employees and stakeholders in problem-solving, long-term projects and policy changes with effective outcomes.
- Knowledge of federal procedures regarding criminal evidence and investigations.
- Ability to accurately interpret applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Dedicated and committed to assisting others with ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations.
- Ability to take control of a situation and perform duties effectively and in a professional manner during situations that may rapidly evolve; demonstrated experience in effective conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written materials including federal and state statutes, city codes and ordinances, and departmental/university policies and operating procedures in order to enforce laws and determine appropriate charges.
- Maintain rational decision making and self-control in situations which involve considerable stress, danger, personal risk, violence, hostility, or the use of force.
- Skilled in observation and memory of places, persons, names, and incidents.
- Must be able to respond and be available for on call and/or emergency coverage as required.
- Current and continued Certifications in CPR, First Aid and/or First Responder/AED, blood pathogens, preferred.
- MS Office Suite proficiency.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise Public Safety staff, which includes sworn and non- sworn officers, management staff, administrative staff, part time event security staff, and parking operations staff.
Experience/ Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in criminal justice, police science, public administration, political science or similar discipline or successful graduation from an accredited law enforcement training academy;
