Position Summary

This position will support engineering design and studies in the hydraulics and hydrology (H&H) areas for projects executed by all Global Business Units (GBUs) in Bechtel.  H&H is a subdiscipline of the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group. Primary work duties include performing a wide range of H&H analyses and modeling studies in support of engineering designs and permit applications, preparing and reviewing technical calculations, reports, specifications and design criteria, and dispositioning vendor submittals.  Academic background and working experience in hydraulic transient analyses of pipeline systems, 2-dimensional flood modeling, stormwater management and site drainage design are essential to this position. Other work scope includes design of hydraulic structures such as pump intakes, discharge outfalls, spillways, energy dissipators; surface water hydrologic assessment such as precipitation and rainfall-runoff modeling; and open channel hydraulic analyses.  The position requires the ability to work independently and exercise sound engineering judgment in problem definition, early risk identification, evaluation and adaptation of engineering principles and techniques. Responsibilities also include the coordination of work tasks with technical specialists in the G&HES group, and with project teams and staff from various functions and engineering disciplines. Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and the embrace of Bechtel’s diversity & inclusion, leadership, quality, and safety values are required.

The position will be based in Reston, VA. The successful candidate will report to and receive technical and administrative oversights from the H&H Subdiscipline Manager.

Work may require short-term travel to project sites in the U. S. and overseas.

Responsibilities

  • Originate and review H&H deliverables including engineering calculations, licensing and permitting documents, study reports and technical specifications.
  • Specify, collect, review, and interpret H&H data required to support design and permit applications.
  • Review and interpret regulations and permitting requirements relevant to hydraulic design of piping systems, hydrologic assessment in support of site development, and plant operation for different industrial applications.
  • Provide field support during execution of H&H field activities as needed.
  • Evaluate and develop technical solutions on non-standard H&H design.
  • Adhere to schedule and budget for assigned activities.
  • Adhere to project execution plan, and quality assurance requirements and engineering procedures and instructions.
  • Incorporate relevant best practices and lessons learned in H&H specific design and in general engineering execution.
  • Coordinate task assignments with engineers from H&H and other disciplines in consultation with G&HES EGS on projects and H&H Subdiscipline Manager.
  • Receive technical and administrative direction from H&H Subdiscipline Manager.
  • Participate in technical excellence activities.
