Job Description

Hybrid role in Perrysburg, Ohio

The Regional Packaging Engineer is responsible for delivering millions of dollars of savings to the bottom line by working cross-functionally to identify and execute value engineering in the area of packaging. In addition, this person must be very closely connected to the customer to validate requirements and propose affordable yet functional packaging solutions. Furthermore, it is very important for the packaging engineer to be closely linked with procurement and suppliers to find the most cost effective and adequate forms of packaging.

SCOPE AND IMPACT

  • The Regional Packaging Engineer will address key items within the country group supply chain as defined by the global logistics organization.
  • The cost of packaging across the global organization is north of $250M.
  • This position is expected to identify continuous improvement opportunities in package design and other projects that allow material cost savings and load building operating efficiency improvements
  • This role collaborates cross-functionally with Manufacturing/Engineering, Quality, Procurement, the Commercial Organization, the plants, and various other areas within the Supply Chain Organization.     

Responsibilities

  • Review new and existing packaging and establish the most cost effective and adequate package for glass containers while ensuring production line compatibility.
  • Establish a global agenda for packaging revision to deliver cost savings through value engineering.
  • Work closely with the regions to guarantee that all master data is properly maintained in the region.
  • Get clear visibility to cost impacts of different packaging across all regions.
  • Utilize various CAD software systems to support packaging specifications such as PRO-E/Smart Assembly for the development of secondary packaging specifications, and TOPS to develop truckload trailer loading patterns.
  • Conduct plant audits to ensure that the unit and trailer load building process is in conformance to engineering and material handling specifications for safety and performance.  
  • Based Engineering (VBE) and Procurement projects with respect to proposed packaging  specification changes through oversight of production line testing and performance evaluation in order to determine feasibility of material change.
  • Ability to interact with the technical representatives from both packaging vendors and O-I customers when vetting new material designs and/or troubleshooting existing carton and unit load line performance issues.  
  • Maintain an in depth understanding of packaging materials and components including stretch wrap, various pallet types/sizes, strapping, tier sheets, trays, airbags, etc. and how specification changes impact performance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the area of disrupted loads and assist in the resolution of customer quality notifications by implementing root cause investigations and helping to develop corrective action plans for execution by the plants and/or logistics.
  • Collaborate with key customer accounts on new design and specifications for packaging changes and provide value added services as their design arm as needed.
  • Work closely with the Returnable Packaging area in the development of protocols and criteria followed by the third-party sorting and repair service.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree minimum in Packaging, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 5 plus years of experience in corrugated packaging design
  • Proficient in the use of CAD systems - minimum 2 years of experience
  • Specialized packaging software experience preferred
  • Excellent project management skills, Continuous Improvement training desired
  • Strong communication skills both in written and oral form
  • Solid presentation skills, ability to facilitate conversation and develop solutions
  • SAP experience is desir
