Healthcare Data Analyst - Scientific Computing & Data

The Scientific Computing and Data group at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai partners with scientists to accelerate scientific discovery. To achieve these aims, we provide a cutting-edge high-performance computing and data ecosystem along with MD/PhD-level support for researchers and clinicians. The group is composed of a high-performance computing team, the research clinical data warehouse team and a research data services team.
The Healthcare Data Analyst will collaborate with clinical Informaticist and researchers to define and develop appropriate solutions for various reporting needs. These solutions typically involve extracting data from Mount Sinai’s various relational databases, data cleansing, and reformatting into analytic data sets. Solutions may also involve the design, testing, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of data marts. Primary duties are outlined below.
- Assist with translating end-user data requests into technical specifications and specific data elements required for data set, report, or data mart development.
- Assist with requirements elicitation for new reporting and data requests by interacting with end users.
- SQL programming, testing, and performance tuning to fulfill data requests.
- Manage and version control SQL scripts for re-usability.
- Develop custom ETL jobs and/or packages to extract data from various sources and load them into the Mount Sinai Data Warehouse or data marts.
- Design and develop custom database schemas within the Data Warehouse, as needed.
- Test reports and data extracts, and perform volume testing in live environments. Ensure that customers are satisfied with data provided to them.
- Monitor ETL executions and data-load processes as part of routine Data Warehousing operations. Troubleshoot and resolve ETL job failures. On-call support is sometimes required.
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and manage data marts that align with the Data Warehouse architecture and enterprise data strategy.
- Perform related duties as assigned or requested.
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with electronic health record (EHR) and/or healthcare claims data; experience with Epic’s Clarity & Caboodle databases is needed.
- Prior experience working with healthcare terminologies and code sets (e.g., ICD-10, RxNorm, LOINC, CPT), and building or using value sets for specific reporting use cases.
- Ability to articulate technical and organizational approaches to meeting clinical data needs.
- Team player with experience leading and collaborating cross-team to ensure successful delivery of solutions.
- Fast learner with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Highly proficient with SQL programming and professional experience with multiple SQL dialects (e.g., Microsoft -SQL, Oracle PL/SQL).
- Ability to write complex SQL queries, scripts, and stored procedures.
- Ability to assess query performance (e.g., query execution plans) and recommend improvements (e.g., query refactoring, indexing, table partitioning).
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server. Experience with other relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL) is a strong plus.
- Strong understanding of the principles of relational and dimensional data modeling.
- Experience with software development best practices, including all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and rigorous code version control with tools like Git or SVN.
- Prior experience working in a research environment and/or knowledge of research Common Data Models (e.g., OMOP, i2b2, PCORnet, ACT) is a plus; experience with the OMOP Common Data Model is strongly preferred.
Compensation Statement
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for this role is $99,200.00 - $148,800.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
