Senior Director, External Manufacturing (EM) Procurement

About the role

Global Procurement supports the ambitions of GSK by leading procurement initiatives on behalf of GSK business units and operations, enabling the delivery of our products through the entire procurement to pay cycle to the end customer - our patients.

Our external manufacturing network has become an increasingly key component of our Pharma and Vaccines supply chain strategy to enable new GSK to deliver on its growth ambition.

The role is responsible for External Manufacturing Procurement, and accountable for the business performance and financial management of the External Manufacturing Procurement team. The position provides strategic direction to a global team of professionals responsible for procurement leadership of Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) strategic sourcing, selection, negotiation, and contracting process for categories / modelities including large molecules drug substance, vaccine, Aseptic drug products, small molecules APIs, solid oral dosage forms, and packaging services. It is a highly complex role with oversight of £900M in annual spend across ~100 CMOs and a significant growth trajectory to support increased volumes, new product launches, business development, and/or novel technologies. The geographic scope of the role is global with an organization and staff of ~20 colleagues.    

As a key member of the Directs & Sites Leadership team, and reporting into the Head of Directs & Sites Procurement, this role is responsible for leading leaders, driving continuous improvement in cost/cash/value, sustainability, quality and supply by all CMOs, ensuring that stakeholder requirements are met, and CMO performance is measured and maintained at appropriate service levels.

The role requires extensive collaboration with other senior leaders to develop and implement transformational business and CMO strategies that drive increased value.  It requires frequent interaction with senior stakeholders in Global Supply Chain (External Manufacturing, Strategy, Quality, Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT), and Environment, Health and Safety (EHS)), Finance and C-suite leaders from CMOs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define the strategic direction for External Manufacturing Procurement. Align the team's strategies and objectives in support of Global Procurement priorities, GSC and EM's long-term objectives and focus areas and the GSK ambition.

  • Lead, manage, direct, develop, and coach direct reports, and create a team environment that drives high colleague engagement. Provide clarity, focus, direction, set priorities and objectives, and through effective leadership, enable direct reports and their teams to deliver upon category specific objectives and team targets.

  • Interpret industry, CMO and spend category trends impacting GSK and develop innovative strategies and approaches to maximize the benefits or mitigate the risks as applicable. Accountable for delivery of robust market intelligence assessment and act as the business expert for GSK.

  • Assure direct reports and their teams appropriately develop aligned and meaningful global and / or regional category strategies which deliver and enhance value / benefits by Business Units, Operations, and key stakeholders.

  • Accountable for business partnering with the EM leadership team.  The role is required to manage and influence senior stakeholders including Supply Chain Strategy, Technical, Quality, R&D, External Manufacturing, EHS, Finance, Legal.

  • Build strategic partnership with key CMOs and suppliers at a senior level and lead relationship management process to drive value from these commercial relationships. Ensure GSK Enterprise considerations are accounted for.

  • Accountable for ensuring contract planning and coverage, negotiation, execution, and maintenance management is in place. 

  • Enable the team to establish and maintain a plan of action to achieve agreed to savings and value enhancement results, and effectively coordinate and collaborate across direct reports and their teams, the relevant stakeholders and other procurement colleagues to execute such plan.

  • Foster open communication and coordinate with other functions and impacted stakeholders to assure understanding and alignment of business priorities, enabling procurement strategies, mutually agreed implementation plans and compliance with the agreed sourcing strategies.

  • Assure category management, strategic sourcing, and supplier management processes are executed timely and effectively by the team to drive continuous improvement in total cost and value, supplier performance, and service levels for the assigned spend.
